Legacy Recordings Celebrates the 40th Anniversary of ELO’s Out of the Blue

Will Release First-Ever Picture Disc Edition of Classic Double Album, Available Friday, September 29

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of ELO‘s top-selling double album, Out of the Blue, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release the first-time-ever picture disc edition of the ELO classic available everywhere on Friday, September 29.

This 2LP collector’s picture disc edition of Out of the Blue was remastered from the original master tapes and includes a digital download of the album.

Out of the Blue is available for pre-order now here:

ELO was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017.

One of the indisputable masterpieces–and most commercially successful titles–in the ELO canon, Out of the Blue, the group’s seventh studio album, was originally released in October 1977. The musical and conceptual brainchild of Jeff Lynne, who wrote and produced the entire album, Out of the Blue is among the most ambitious double albums in classic rock history, a complex and visionary work that included, as the album’s complete Side 3, Lynne’s “Concerto for a Rainy Day,” a coherent song suite comprised of four movements and authentic ambient weather effects recorded by Lynne and incorporated into the soundscape of the record.

40th anniversary of ELO’s top-selling double album, Out of the Blue

Out of the Blue was the first ELO album to feature the group’s logo as a three-dimensional flying saucer/space station, a visual motif central to ELO’s live shows. The album, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 has gone on to sell upwards of 10 million copies worldwide and is the first double album in UK chart history to spawn four Top 20 singles.

Forty years on, I would never have imagined that this music would take on a life of its own,” says Lynne.

Formed in Birmingham, England in 1970, ELO was designed to create progressive modern pop music combining classical and rock elements. Lynne has consistently been ELO’s guiding light and driving force, writing virtually all of the group’s original material while producing the albums.

From 1972 through 1986, the golden era of recording and touring, the group racked up more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet while selling more than 50 million records worldwide. During the same period, ELO scored twenty Top 20s on the UK Singles Chart and fifteen Top 20s on the US Billboard Hot 100.

More recently, recording and touring as Jeff Lynne’s ELO, saw the 2015 release of the critically acclaimed album Alone In The Universe on Columbia Records, the first album of all-new music released by the band in over a decade. The band also just played a sold-out Wembley Stadium show in London on June 24th.

Legacy’s Classic Christmas Album Series Rings In The Holidays With New Collections By Alabama, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Martina McBride, Barbra Streisand, And Andy Williams

All titles arrive in stores October 8, 2013

Legacy Recordings’ Classic Christmas Album Series (http://www.legacyrecordings.com) rings in this year’s holiday season with new collections by Alabama, Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, George Jones & Tammy Wynette, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Martina McBride, Barbra Streisand, and Andy Williams.  The eight new titles will be available everywhere October 8, 2013 through Legacy Recordings, a division of Sony Music Entertainment.

Each new collection gathers a dozen or more remastered tracks that span the career of each artist, all of whom recorded multiple holiday albums through the years (some on multiple record labels), as well as occasional Christmas tunes on other albums such as soundtracks or benefit albums.

The Classic Christmas Album by Neil Diamond, for example, draws its selections from his three holiday bestsellers: The Christmas Album (1992), The Christmas Album 2 (1994), and A Cherry Cherry Christmas (2009).  The Classic Christmas Album by Alabama presents tracks from Alabama Christmas (1985), Christmas With The Judds And Alabama (1994), and Alabama Christmas Vol. II (1996).  The Classic Christmas Album by Gladys Knight & the Pips gathers songs from Bless This House (1975, Buddah) and That Special Time Of Year (1980, Columbia).

With many of their holiday albums either out-of-print, or never issued on CD, or highly collectible rarities, each new title in the Classic Christmas Album series is a welcome cross-section of those hard-to-find classics.  Each Classic Christmas Album gathers a career’s worth of precious memories, often spanning decades, while creating new memories at the same time.

first double-CD chronology ever assembled on Australia’s favorite sons, MIDNIGHT OIL. ESSENTIAL OILS spotlights the band’s early development years (1978-1985) on the first disc before moving on to their tenure as a world-class touring and recording outfit (1987-2002) on the second disc.  The songs that won them a global audience pour out like a machine gun volley to the heart: “Beds Are Burning,” “Dreamworld,” “The Dead Heart,” “Blue Sky Mine,” “Forgotten Years,” “King Of the Mountain,” “Truganini,” and more.

MIDNIGHT OIL won audiences with their fierce commitment to social, environmental, anti-nuclear, and human rights causes, especially the plight of Australia’s indigenous Aboriginal native culture. During the divisive Reagan-Bush era, a period that turned out to be as volatile and disenfranchising as the late-1960s, Midnight Oil’s conscience struck a raw nerve in America. Nearly 20 years into their career, they earned critical and commercial success in the U.S. (and UK) that would stand them in good stead for their next decade, until their official disbandment in 2002.

From 1978’s “Run By Night” (off their self-titled debut LP on the indie Powderworks label) to 2002’s “Luritja Way” (from their final album, Capricornia), ESSENTIAL OILS collects 28 Midnight Oil single sides, and eight well-chosen album and EP tracks. “For this collection,” said the band’s guitarist/KEYBOARDIST JIM MOGINIE, “we put our most definitive songs in chronological timeline, so listening feels like a turbo boosted journey at light speed through 25 years of being in Midnight Oil.” Continue reading

Paul Anka Commemorates 55th Year As A Singer/Songwriter/Entertainer With Duets, CD Collection Of Superstar Collaborations

A new 14-song collection by pop music legend PAUL ANKA, DUETS, is set for release April 9th through LEGACY RECORDINGS, a division of SONY MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT.  The release coincides with the in-store date for Anka’s long-awaited life story, MY WAY: An Autobiography, co-written with DAVID DALTON and published by St. Martins Press.

DUETS provides a musical journey through the life and times of the man.  Anka (born July 30, 1941) was studying piano and was a

local Canadian performer (mainly an impressionist) by age 12 in 1953, which would make 2013 his 60th year as a performer. He led his first vocal group at 13 (THE BOBBY SOXERS), wrote his first songs at 14, and recorded his first commercial single in Los Angeles at 15 (the summer after 9th grade!). He signed with ABC-PARAMOUNT at age 16 in 1957, igniting the pop firmament with “Diana,” “You Are My Destiny,” and all the hits that followed.

In his 55th year as a performer, PAUL ANKA is an American national treasure (notwithstanding he was born in Ottawa) who quickly separated himself from the pack of teen idols that surfaced in the mid-to-late 1950s. He did this mainly by virtue of writing all his own hits (“Diana,” “You Are My Destiny,” “Lonely Boy,” “Put Your Head On My Shoulder,” “Puppy Love“), and taking control of his business career (producing, buying and owning his master recordings, a practice he still employs today). He further separated himself from the pack during the pre-Beatles era by moving into posh big city night clubs like New York’s COPACABANA, that were long the province of FRANK SINATRA and his generation. Anka also graduated from early rock exploitation films (like Let’s Rock and Girls Town) into mature film roles like The Longest Day, (for which he wrote the Oscar-nominated title song).

Don’t judge me but I have to say it: I LOVE GUMMIBÄR!  From the moment I received the package of CDs and DVDs in the mail, I have been spellbound by Gummibär and his friend: KALA (a ‘serval cat,’ and the brain in the group), HARRY, the nerdy know-it-all chameleon, and VAM PIRO (a vampire bat with a big problem: He faints at the sight of blood!).

GUMMIBÄR is a green blue-eyed character that is usually naked except for orange underwear and sneakers and also seems to have been bitten (with a small portion of the upper left ear missing), which may be why he sings about candy. Gummibär represents the child inside of us (much like SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS); and he’s a dancing machine!  He knows how to work that body like no one else! Again, much like the SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS character, there’s an element of adult sarcastic humor mixed in with a kid’s smart-alecky sensibility and I love it all. The theme song (“I am a Gummy Bear”) is like a classic earworm, and the new Christmas DVD, “The Yummy Gummy Search for Santa”, is a new Christmas classic. The cultural references sprinkled throughout the movie are to die for!

The first Gummibär theme song, “I’m a Gummy Bear” (“The Gummy Bear Song”), was produced in Germany in late 2006, and became a regional success as a dance song. The company has since created six additional music videos for a global audience in an increasing number of languages, has recorded additional songs, and Gummibär songs and videos have now been recorded in over 28 languages. They recently announced the addition of party supply products and cookie cutters to the mix, and much more are on the way. For Christmas 2012, check the new Christmas DVD, the CDs (“I am a Gummy Bear”, “Gummibär Christmas Jollies”, “Gummibär: La La Love to Dance”) and the DVD (“The Gummibär Video Collection”).
