Banana Republic Shifts New York Fashion Week (NYFW) Presentation Timing And Expands Partnership With Global Style Ambassador Olivia Palermo

Banana Republic Launches Olivia Palermo Spring 2017 Pop-Ups at February NYFW and Announces a Fall 2017 Olivia Palermo Capsule Collection to Debut at September NYFW

More changes to the upcoming New York Fashion Week Fall2017/Winter 2018 Collections Show schedule were announced today. In addition to Vera Wang and Rodarte announcing their plans to show in Paris in March, other designers showing in Los Angeles (Tommy Hilfiger, Tom Ford and Rebecca Minkoff, among others) and this being the last time (in a while that) Proenza Schouler will be showing in New York City (they are relocating their next show– and the next one after that–to Paris next July during the Fall 2017/Winter 2018 Haute Couture collections show week), New York Fashion Week seems to be changing shape yet again. And I am sure that even more changes will be announced before the start of the shows in early February.banana_republic_logo

Banana Republic today announced that it will shift the timing of its NYFW presentations to be customer-facing when the collections are in-store and sees this as a natural evolution for the brand—among the first to offer See Now, Buy Now to customers a year ago—in service to customer demand for product as it’s shown.

On February 9, Banana Republic will celebrate its Spring/Summer 2017 collection with Olivia Palermo Pop-Up Shops at select Banana Republic stores. As the company’s Global Style Ambassador, Palermo has curated a distinctive pop-up experience in top Banana Republic doors. The pop-ups will reflect Palermo’s style from both an interior and fashion perspective, including personal touches that make the experience unique to her sensibility. An assortment of Banana Republic and third-party product personally picked by Palermo will sit in the pop-up shops year-round.

To kick off NYFW on February 9, Banana Republic will host pop-up celebrations at three store locations – SoHo (New York, NY), The Grove (Los Angeles, CA) and Grant Street (San Francisco, CA). Fans can meet Palermo at the SoHo event on February 9, or tune into Banana Republic’s LIVE 360 at 6 pm ET to join the party on www.bananarepublic.com. To top off February 9’s festivities, Banana Republic will be offering #BRSTYLERIDE – luxury lifts between select Banana Republic stores within New York, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, courtesy of BMW. Customers can get a ride in style with proof of purchase or use of #BRSTYLERIDE on social media.

As a further build to their partnership, Palermo and Banana Republic will reveal a Fall 2017 capsule collection designed by Palermo and the Banana Republic design team during the Spring/Summer 2018 Shows in September at NYFW. Supporting the brand’s goal to amplify awareness when collections hit stores, a private preview of the company’s Fall 2017 collections will be hosted for the long-lead press during February NYFW shows and then will be kept under-wraps until it is available for customer purchase in September.

I am so honored to evolve my partnership with Banana Republic with such a personal approach to both our pop-ups and capsule collection,” says Palermo. “We’re a great team and it’s truly been such a collaborative approach that reflects the synergy between my style and the brand.”

Nordstrom & Piece & Co. Launch Capsule Collection with Eight Top Brands to Support Women Worldwide

This spring, Nordstrom and Piece & Co. are collaborating on a new collection of apparel and accessories that connects style with global impact. Founded in 2011 by Kathleen Wright, Piece & Co. is committed to ending global poverty by providing sustainable employment opportunities to female artisans. Wright wanted to help women artisans create a marketplace for their products, and in turn create sustainable employment for themselves. Soon she began to make connections with brands that were looking for authentic alternatives to factory-produced fabrics and accessories and today, the handmade textiles she helps source – ikat, block print, tie-dye – are sought-after for their one-of-a-kind prints, bold colors and interesting textures. Piece & Co. was born. To date, Piece & Co. has created thousands of jobs for women in more than 30 countries by connecting their craft with brands who serve a global marketplace of conscious consumers. With one brand’s order, between 75 and 100 artisans can be employed for up to three months. By joining forces with Nordstrom, these brands are able to create more than 5,000 jobs through Piece & Co.

Launching today, the capsule collection brings to life the work of women artisans around the world through unique, stylish pieces from eight incredible brands – Alice + Olivia, Current/Elliott, DVF, Joie, Rebecca Minkoff, Theory, The Honest Company, and Tory Burch. Each brand worked closely with Piece & Co. to source handmade materials and fabrics that are then incorporated into their pieces – dresses, tops, skirts, shorts and handbags. The collection will be available at select Nordstrom stores and on nordstrom.com (nordstrom.com/pieceandco).

In the collection, customers will find classic silhouettes revisited in global patterns and colors, including:

–    DVF‘s iconic wrap dress, this time made with hand-printed indigo batik, an ancient fabric printing technique that incorporates wax resist and dye.
–    Alice + Olivia‘s A-line dress in an artisan-made bold blue and white loom-woven fabric, made in a weaving cooperative in India.
–    Rebecca Minkoff‘s ‘Mini MAC’ cross-body in cognac leather accented with backstrap loom fabric, an ancient weave technique from Vietnam.
–    Tory Burch‘s crackle printed canvas separates made of hand-painted fabric from Zambia.
–    The Honest Company‘s nursing scarves made from hand-woven stripe and chambray designs and silk-screen printed fabrics from Maheshwar and Jodhpur, India.
–    Theory‘s tunics and city shorts in fatigue and block prints from India that are created using a hand-carved wooden stamp.
–    Current/Elliott‘s prep school shirts in black & white ikat or floral block prints made in India.
–    Joie‘s blue and white ikat on casual summer staples: jumper, shorts and a sleeveless dress.

What excites us most about this collaboration with Piece & Co. is how each of the brands really embraced the idea that the clothing they’re designing can truly make a difference,” said Tricia Smith, executive vice president, general merchandise manager, Women’s Apparel at Nordstrom. “It’s been inspiring to see how all of the brands have enjoyed creating their items with these beautiful fabrics and how they’ve now been incorporated into their spring collections.

When you invest in a woman, you invest in her family and community, too,” said Wright. “On average, women invest 90 percent of their income back into their families. This includes putting healthy food on the table, paying for their children to go school, or buying healthcare. And our artisans are no different. When we employ one artisan woman, we impact many. Pretty amazing things happen when women from around the world come together. I’m excited for the possibilities that this collaboration with Nordstrom and these fantastic brands brings.”

2013 ENK Accessorie Circuit and Intermezzo Collections 5

Anytime I got to a trade show at Javits Center in New York City, it has the potential to be an Alladin’s cave of potentially beautiful things, as well as an adventure in terror. You never quite know what you will be facing but hey, life’s an adventure, so why not play? ENK is the most prolific trade show producer in the United States, yearly producing a series of trade exhibitions that include nearly 10,00 design companies in New York City, Las Vegas and Shanghai. ENK shows–16+ annual exhibitions including Coterie, Accessorie Circuit, Intermezzo Collections, Children’s Club, ENKVegas, and ENK_largeENKChina in Shanghai–attract 250,000 domestic and international buyers and press, producing sales over $1 billion. Overall, more than 700 brands (big and small– including J Brand, Nicole Miller, Alex Bittar, Current/Elliott, Tracy Reese, Nonoo, Badgley Mischska, Erickson Beamon, Rebecca Minkoff, Vince, Cynthia Vincent, Andrew Marc, Dolce Vita, Equipment, Issa, Nanette Lepore, Tibi, Rebecca Taylor, Botkier) participated in this year’s Accessorie Circuit (featuring some of the world’s premier accessories and footwear designers) and Intermezzo Collections (contemporary ready-to-wear designers showcasing their Holiday 2013, Pre-Spring 2014 Resort and Spring 2014 Collections).

On the positive side of the fence, we saw and interacted with some very talented designers and craftspeople. Terracotta New York’s Alina Cheung and Yidi Xu (www.terracottanewyork.com) has a back story I found very fascinating. In 209 BC, 8,000 clay warriors defending the First Qin Emperor were sealed beneath China’s soil, as a once-powerful man sought lasting power for all eternity. Buried in an underground palace among rivers of mercury, these clay-fired, life-sized replica soldiers have come to be known as, “the Terracotta Warriors”. The Army is Art. Each soldier was crafted by hand and logotrial4colored with pigments from pink to blue to lilac. They vary in height and claimed individual facial features. And below each face sit carefully sculpted neck ties – the first of their kind.  The Terracotta Army is a harmonious whole, and yet no two are alike.

Over 2,000 years later, Terracotta New York was founded on principles reminiscent of this ancient wonder. Unique yet Uniform, Ambitious yet Artful. Created by two women who are no strangers to the corporate world and the ties that filled them, Terracotta New York seeks to encourage individuality and promote confidence by bringing the long-standing tradition of simplicity and pattern in menswear to luxury accessories for women. With a touch of feminine flare, women can have just as much fun with a bow tie and a penguin pattern!

San Francisco-based Summer Powell of Summerized (www.summerized.com) who creates jewelry that is at once Art Deco-edgy and seriously breathtaking. Influenced by her background in graphic design, Summer Powell’s 3d designs are fun, fresh, modern and lure. Summer lusted after massive diamond earrings, yet there was nothing on the market like the picture in her head. So she printed her own diamonds. After drawing them in CAD, she sent them to a 3d printer. Summerized jewelry designs are literally printed. They’re created in CAD 3d software, and realized using Selective Laser summerized_logo_whiteSintering, a 3d printing technology. With SLS, a laser fuses material and builds complex objects one layer at a time. Two weeks later, Summer had the biggest rocks in town! She’d created her first 3d printed jewelry design, and the Gemetrica Collection was born.

A lover of dichotomies, Summer is inspired by the intersection of body and technology, natural and artificial, high and low, Barneys and K-mart, New York street style and Northern California zen. Her work lives on the continuum of quirky to profound. Other influences include a lifelong interest in patterns, mythologies, ancient symbols, geometry, origami, world travel, flora and fauna, and op and pop art. Summer brings graphic energy into three-dimensional reality. She’s always merged 2 and 3-dimensional media, creating vacuum-formed speaker-inspired briefcases for VH1, a mesmerizing motion graphic-based animated clock, and temporary technological tattoos for partiers. Her background includes an MFA in graphic design from Cranbrook Academy of Art; creative direction at several design firms; co-founding Elevator, a NYC-based boutique design firm with clients like Viacom and the Oxygen Network; and creative direction for Silicon Valley startups.
