OPI Announces Kerry Washington As Creative Ambassador

OPI Products Inc. has announced a collaboration with Emmy® and Golden Globe® nominated actress Kerry Washington, who will act as the brand’s first-ever Creative Ambassador. OPI is known for its exceptional formula, fashionable colors and iconic names, OPI’s heavily-pigmented lacquers are super rich, long-lasting and chip-resistant – offering an affordable luxury to consumers.

Ms. Washington is a versatile and fearless actress who continues to shine on both the big screen and small. A native of The Bronx, Washington has received high acclaim for her work on stage, on television and on film.

In television, Washington currently stars in the hit ABC drama “Scandal.” For this role, Washington broke barriers by becoming the first African American woman to a headline a network TV show since the 1974 short-lived series “Get Christie Love.” In 2013, Washington earned her first primetime Emmy Award nomination for her portrayal of Olivia Pope. She was also awarded an NAACP Image Award for Best Actress and the show won for Best Drama. The NAACP also honored Washington with the President’s Award, recognizing special achievement in furthering the cause of civil rights and public service.

In spring 2016, Kerry will be seen starring with Wendell Pierce, Greg Kinnear and Jennifer Hudson in HBO’s CONFIRMATION, which Kerry also executive produced. An activist, Washington was appointed by President Barack Obama to the President’s Committee of the Arts and Humanities in 2009. She also is an active member of the V-Counsel, an esteemed group of advisors to V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls

Washington will be responsible for co-curating nail lacquer shades and developing shade names with OPI co-founder and brand ambassador Suzi Weiss-Fischmann, and will be sourcing inspiration for and consulting on various aspects of creative for the company.

Weiss-Fischmann first approached Washington with the idea to work together in spring 2015 and was met with an enthusiastic “YES.” Over the following few months, they worked together to develop this new role. “I am excited and honored to have Kerry as an ambassador for the OPI brand and grateful for the chance to collaborate with her,” says Weiss-Fischmann.

OSCAR 2015 NEWS: NEW PRESENTERS ADDED

Jason Bateman, Idris Elba, Ansel Elgort, Nicole Kidman, Liam Neeson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Channing Tatum has been added to the list of presenters for this year’s Oscars to be hosted by Neil Patrick Harris and airing on Sunday, February 22, live on ABC.

Bateman appeared in the Best Picture Oscar®- nominated films “Up in the Air” (2009) and “Juno” (2007). Most recently Bateman starred in the “Horrible Bosses” (2011 and 2014) franchise, “This Is Where I Leave You” (2014), and “Bad Words” (2013), Bateman’s directorial debut.  He is currently working on “Untitled Joel Edgerton Project” and recently wrapped production of “The Family Fang,” his second directorial effort in which he also stars.

OSCAR® WINNER JENNIFER HUDSON TO PERFORM AT 87TH OSCARS®

Oscar and Grammy-winning singer and actress Jennifer Hudson will be performing on the 87th Oscars, hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, will air on Sunday, February 22, live on ABC.

We’re creating several musical sequences for the Oscars and we couldn’t be happier that our friend, Jennifer Hudson, will be performing in one of them,” says Zadan and Meron.

Hudson won the Oscar for Actress in a Supporting Role for the 2006 film “Dreamgirls.” Her other acting credits include “Sex and the City” (2008), “The Secret Life of Bees” (2008), “Winnie Mandela” (2013) and “The Inevitable Defeat of Mister & Pete” (2013). Hudson’s self-titled debut album won the 2008 Grammy Award for Best R&B Album and was certified Gold, as was her second album, “I Remember Me.” This year she was nominated for Best R&B Performance for the song “It’s Your World,” from her 2014 album, “JHUD.”

ANNA KENDRICK TO PERFORM AT 87TH OSCARS

Actress and singer Anna Kendrick will also make a special appearance at the 87th Oscars.

“Out of the woods and on to the Oscar stage, Anna will be performing something special that is sure to be an “Only on the Oscars” moment.” says Zadan and Meron.

Kendrick was nominated for an Oscar® for her supporting role in the 2009 film “Up in the Air.” Her other film credits include “Into the Woods” (2014), “Pitch Perfect” (2012) and the “Twilight” film series. In 1998, at the age of 12, Kendrick was nominated for a Tony Award® for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for “High Society.” She will star in the films “The Last Five Years,” “The Hollars,” and “Pitch Perfect 2” later this year.

ESSENCE, the #1 media brand for African-American women, has named Stefani Saintonge as the winner of its first The Essence Black Women in Hollywood Short Film Contest: Spotlight On Our Journeys, it was announced today.

An ESSENCE first, the Black Women in Hollywood Short Film Contest challenged entrants to present unique, refreshing visions of Black women—multidimensional portrayals that are different from the stereotypical and often negative images that respondents in a recent ESSENCE study said don’t reflect the totality of who they are. Last November, ESSENCE invited aspiring filmmakers to showcase their own inspiring images reflecting the truths and triumphs of Black women’s lives by entering the contest. Contest finalists were selected from an eclectic gathering of submissions by a team of ESSENCE editors. From there, ESSENCE’s Black Women in Hollywood Academy, featuring top industry tastemakers chose Saintonge as the winner—who will be recognized in the company of A-listers during the 7th annual ESSENCE Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon held onFebruary 27, 2014. Saintonge will receive the Black Women in Hollywood Discovery Award. Saintonge’s journey will be chronicled on Essence.com, and a portion of her film will be shown at the Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon.

CALIFORNIA STUDENT LAILA AL-SHAMMA NAMED 2013 GLSEN STUDENT ADVOCATE OF THE YEAR PRESENTED BY AT&T

GLSEN, The (National) Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network (GLSEN), announced that Emmy-nominated, award-winning actress Kerry Washington, star of the hit ABC-TV series Scandal and feature films Django Unchained and Ray, and openly gay LA Galaxy soccer player Robbie Rogers will serve as Honorary Co-Chairs for this year’s GLSEN Respect Awards – Los Angeles presented by Target and Wells Fargo, to take place at The Beverly Hills Hotel on Friday, October 18, 2013.  This year, GLSEN will honor leading global, award-winning entertainment company Lionsgate (Chairman’s Award); Emmy/Golden Globe award-winning producer Linda Bloodworth Thomason (Lifetime Achievement Award); Emmy/Golden Globe award-winning actor Jim Parsons and partner Todd Spiewak (Inspiration Award); and 11th grade student Laila Al-Shamma of Carlsbad, California (2013 Student Advocate of the Year).

In addition, openly gay songwriter, recording artist and YouTube sensation Steve Grand will perform his hit single, “All American Boy“. The internationally-recognized, award-winning John Burroughs High School show choir will open the annual gala, performing a special version of the song “One More Time,” which was written by Academy Award-winning songwriter Dean Pitchford (Fame, Footloose) and featured in the movies “Sing” and “Sarafina.” Both will be on hand to support GLSEN’s impactful anti-bullying efforts in K-12 schools nationwide.

GLSEN’s Student Advocate of the Year honors an outstanding young person whose efforts have helped ensure a safe learning environment for all students — and have served as a voice of change in their school and community.

Laila is an inspiring example of how students can positively change their school community for generations to come,” said Dr. Eliza Byard, GLSEN’s Executive Director. “Laila has demonstrated outstanding leadership at her school and community, which is precisely what we seek to honor in the GLSEN Student Advocate of the Year. She has a promising future ahead and I am confident her leadership will continue to inspire those around her.”

“I’m so honored to represent GLSEN as its Student Advocate of the Year,” said honoree Laila Al-Shamma. “This award inspires me and my peers to keep moving forward and help others create safe schools for all LGBTQ youth. Thank you to GLSEN for the encouragement and support you give to students like me across the country.”

A half-Iraqi and one quarter Hispanic lesbian teen, Laila joined her high school’s Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) when she was a freshman. She quickly became a part of the student club’s leadership resulting in her successful coordination of GLSEN’s Day of Silence and Transgender Day of Remembrance.

With help from her GSA, Laila later went on to spearhead a Safe Space Campaign designed to engage school personnel about the importance of safe spaces for LGBT students at school. Educators were offered a packet of information and asked to display a Safe Space sticker in their classroom. Laila will soon begin making presentations about the campaign to both middle schools in her school district. Continue reading
