UBS will celebrate the opening of Art Basel Miami Beach 2016 by releasing its first major print publication on the UBS Art Collection in nearly a decade. UBS Art Collection: To Art its Freedom is a 274-page, deluxe hardback overview of the UBS Art Collection that includes a text on the history of the collection written by Mary Rozell, Global Head UBS Art Collection, as well as an essay by noted scholar Dieter Buchhart. The volume features more than 200 color illustrations of works by acknowledged masters such as Cy Twombly, Alighiero Boetti, Mary Heilmann, Ed Ruscha and Christopher Wool alongside a number of the collection’s recent acquisitions and works by emerging artists.

This publication, which will be launched at Art Basel Miami Beach 2016, provides the inspiration for the selection of artworks on view within the UBS lounge. UBS Art Collection: To Art its Freedom will feature more than 200 color illustrations and includes the text: “UBS Art Collection: A History and a Moment” written by Mary Rozell, Global Head UBS Art Collection, which presents a history of the Collection, as well as a view to its future. The central essay by noted art historian and curator Dieter Buchhart entitled “To Art its Freedom: A Collection as Emblem of Post-postmodern Polyphony” which contextualizes the Collection within the framework of art history and makes connections among the various featured works. The title of the publication is a quotation from the famous words above the entrance to the Secession Building in Vienna, “To Every Age its Art, to Art its Freedom,” which, according to Buchhart, reflects the spirit of the UBS Art Collection – one that endures and remains relevant, independent of changing circumstances or frameworks.

Sundance Institute Announces Films In Competition And Next For 2016 Sundance Film Festival

Offering a first look at the year ahead in independent film, culture and new ideas, The Sundance Institute announced the 65 films selected for the U.S. Competition, World Competition and out-of-competition NEXT category set to premiere at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, January 21-31 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. Films that have premiered in these sections include Beasts of the Southern Wild, Fruitvale Station,Whiplash, Blackfish, The September Issue, The Cove, An Education, Animal Kingdom, Precious, A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night, Obvious Child, Tangerine and Escape from Tomorrow.Announcement1_C

For the 2016 Festival, 120 feature-length films were selected, representing 37 countries and 48 first-time filmmakers, including 28 in competition. These films were selected from 12,793 submissions, including 4,081 feature-length films and 8,712 short films. Of the feature film submissions, 1,972 were from the U.S. and 2,109 were international. 98 feature films at the Festival will be world premieres. The 2014 Sundance Film Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

New Frontier champions films that expand, experiment with, and explode traditional storytelling. Recognizing the crossroads of film, art, and media technology as a hotbed for cinematic innovation, New Frontier is also a venue showcasing media installations, multimedia performances, transmedia experiences, and panel discussions that explore the expansion of cinema culture in today’s rapidly changing media landscape.

Most of the installations will be housed at a new, 5,000-square-foot location at the Gateway in Park City, which is adjacent to Main Street; Doug Aitken’s The Source (evolving) and the Klip Collective exterior projections on the Egyptian Theatre will be in nearby locations along the Main Street corridor. Admission to all New Frontier installations is free.

This year’s expanded ‘New Frontier’ allows artists to continue pushing the boundaries in telling their stories,” said Robert Redford, President & Founder of Sundance Institute. “In addition, this expanded work helps us mark the 30th anniversary of the Sundance Film Festival,” he added.

Shari Frilot, Sundance Film Festival Senior Programmer and curator of the exhibition, said, “As human and machine, biological and media experiences blur and hybridize, the distinctions between them are also becoming irrelevant. The digital and the organic integrally constitute a new primordial pool. What does creativity and storytelling look like if we revel in this new way of being?”

U.S. PREMIERE OF DOUG AITKEN’S SITE-SPECIFIC FILM INSTALLATION THE SOURCE (EVOLVING) The 2014 edition of New Frontier at the Sundance Film Festival will host the U.S. premiere of The Source (evolving) by renowned artist Doug Aitken.The Source (evolving) is a series of filmed conversations about creativity in the 21st Century in which Aitken conducts short candid conversations with groundbreaking pioneers in different artistic disciplines.

The piece creates a fast and rhythmic kaleidoscope of dialogues with the creative individuals who are shaping modern culture. The conversations are grounded by two questions: where does the creative idea start, and what is the journey to the finished creation? The Source (evolving) is filmed on location in unique and diverse destinations throughout the world and premiered at the Tate Liverpool last year. The Source (evolving) will be housed in the Pavilion, a new 2,000-square-feet, stand-alone, circular structure to be custom-built by the Festival in a location adjacent to Park City’s Main Street. The architecture was created in collaboration with David Adjaye. Six-channel video projections of The Source (evolving) span the entire width of the structure’s interior and are also visible from the outside, wrapping the structure’s exterior.

For the Festival, Aitken will develop an accompanying interactive website for The Source (evolving). The website will connect audiences not attending the Festival with the work and serve as a living archive that Aitken will continue to populate with interviews in the years to come. Currently, the interviewees include William Eggleston, Ryan Trecartin, Thomas Demand, Richard Phillips, Lucky Dragons, Paolo Soleri, Jack Pierson, James Murphy, Stephen Shore, Jacques Herzog, Philippe Parreno, Liz Diller, Jack White, Mike Kelley, Devendra Banhart, Beck, David Adjaye, Tilda Swinton, Alice Waters, Aaron Koblin, Liz Glynn, Theaster Gates, and James Turrell.

Aitken said, “The Source (evolving) examines the entire process of creation, not just the finished result, and speaking directly with the creators whose work has the ability to steer culture in a significant way, The Source (evolving) takes viewers on a fast-moving road trip through the modern landscape of creativity.”

As such, The Sundance Film Festival, with its legacy of discovering inspired independent artists and attracting audiences curious about the creative process, is the perfect platform to host the U.S. premiere of The Source (evolving). Aitken’s work was last featured at the Sundance Film Festival in the 2008 edition of New Frontier, where he presented a special single-channel version of Sleepwalkers, his groundbreaking MoMA installation that transformed an entire block of Manhattan into an expansive cinematic experience as he covered the museum’s exteriors walls with projections. The U.S. premiere of The Source (evolving) at the Festival is made possible by a generous contribution from The Maurice Marciano Family Foundation.

The Festival is a program of the non-profit Sundance Institute®.

Programmed in partnership with the Utah Film Center’s Tumbleweeds Program, the inaugural “Sundance Kids” section features the World Premiere of the English-language version of the acclaimed Ernest and Celestine (Directors: Benjamin Renner, Stéphane Aubier, Vincent Patar) and the U.S. Premiere of Zip & Zap and the Marble Gang (Director: Oskar Santos), and will be part of the 2014 Festival, running from January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

This year’s CONVERSATIONS PROGRAM in Miami Beach launches on Thursday, December 5 with the Premiere Artist Talk by the American multimedia artist Doug Aitken, discussing his recent nomadic project ‘Station to Station’ in conversation with Artforum Editor Michelle Kuo.

The 2013 Conversations program features a particularly strong line-up of leading international museum directors and curators. Drawing on recent experiences with transnational initiatives and collaborations, a panel of leading curators and museum directors and curators, including Patrick Charpenel, Chris Dercon, Chus Martinez and Alexandra Munroe, explores the benefits and pitfalls of museums going global. The program includes the continuation of a series launched at Art Basel in Hong Kong earlier this year ‘The Artist and the Gallerist’ with a conversation between the artist Abraham Cruzvillegas and Monica Manzutto and Jose Kuri, the founders of kurimanzutto, Mexico City. The series concludes with a panel discussion among artists including Cory Arcangel, Cécile B. Evans, Camille Henrot, and Robert Whitman, whose work relates to technological developments and digital realm moderated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Co- Director, Serpentine Gallery, London. The Conversations series is presented by Absolut.

An open platform for shorter, often informal presentations, the afternoon Salon program features artist talks, panel discussions, lectures and book launches with curators, museum directors, lawyers, and artists, including from the show’s Public and Film sectors. Topics are as varied as the participants, ranging from artist talks, a presentation on Constructive Art Criticism in Latin America, to a roundtable conversation on the role of small-scale arts institutions and a discussion entitled ‘Bankrupt Cities. Endangered Museums: Learning From the Case of the Detroit Institute of Arts’. A series of engaging pairings – the artist Tracey Emin with Sir Norman Rosenthal; John Baldessari with Hans Ulrich Obrist; Olafur Eliasson with Klaus Biesenbach; and Josh Baer of the Baer Faxt with the artist Joseph Kosuth – promise to provide unique insight into the artists practice, the balance between the art market and art history.

Conversations takes place daily from Thursday, December 5 to Sunday, December 8, 10am to 11:30am – and Salon daily Thursday, December 5 to Sunday, December 8, from 1pm to 7pm (Sunday to 4pm). Both programs take place in the Hall C auditorium of the Miami Beach Convention Center. Talks from the Conversations program are free to the public. Doug Aitken inaugurates Conversations with a discussion about his most recent project ‘Station to Station’. This nomadic ‘happening’ took place on a train that visited cities, towns and remote locations is an artist-created project that embraced constantly changing stories, unexpected encounters and creative collisions between artists, musicians and creative pioneers.

Friday, December 6 – Public/Private | Museums Go Global

Expanding the collecting and exhibiting mandates of many leading western museums is accompanied by a host of unanswered questions: What aspects of global art culture should these institutions embrace? How should museums modify their approaches to collecting, programming, and educating? What institutional models should they adopt? And how are artists and institutions in other parts of the world responding to the intensified regional presence of western institutions? Drawing on recent experiences with global initiatives and collaborations, this panel of leading curators and museum directors will explore the benefits and pitfalls of museums going global.

The Museum of Modern Art’s 2013 Film Benefit Honors Tilda Swinton on November 5

The Museum of Modern Art’s 2013 Film Benefit, to be held on November 5, will honor actress Tilda Swinton, an Academy Award winner for Best Supporting Actress for Michael Clayton (2007). Swinton has starred in a wide range of films including Orlando (1992), The Deep End (2001), The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (2007), Julia (2008), Burn After Reading (2008), I am Love (2009), We Need to Talk About Kevin (2011), and Only Lovers Left Alive (2013). Throughout her career, Swinton has worked with notable artists/filmmakers including Doug Aitken, Lynn Hershman-Leeson, Derek Jarman, Olivier Saillard, and Isaac Julien as well as conceiving her performance art piece The Maybe which she first performed at the Serpentine gallery in London in 1995 and most recently—in 2013—at MoMA.moma-logo

The honorary co-chairs for the 2013 Film Benefit are Marie-Josée Kravis, President, and Jerry I. Speyer, Chairman, of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. The event’s co-chairs include Wes Anderson, David Bowie, Ralph Fiennes, Karl Lagerfeld, and Anna Wintour.

The Film Benefit will be highlighted by a tribute recognizing Swinton’s acclaimed work and a gala dinner. The event is generously sponsored by Chanel.
