From Goldilocks to High Art to Space Suits: Trio of Art Exhibits Opening at National Air and Space Museum

What do spacesuits, aerospace-themed art, and the search for planets capable of supporting life have in common? From July 26 to the end of the year, three mini-exhibits exploring those topics will share the Flight and the Arts gallery at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC.

Suited for Space: Spacesuits That Helped Launch the American Space Program Explored in New (Traveling) Smithsonian Exhibition

The history of the United States is one of perilous voyages into unchartered territories, but few journeys have captured the imagination and hearts of the public as the race into space. In May 1961, when President John F. Kennedy made the promise that America would put a man on the moon within a decade, the ability to fulfill that promise truly existed only in theory. It was seemingly unattainable, but American ingenuity, innovation, and determination made the impossible possible. And it is that ingenuity and innovation that is explored and celebrated in the SITES exhibit Suited for Space.

Suited for Space, an exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition (SITES) and the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum that explores the evolution of spacesuit development from the first quarter of the 20th century until the dawn of the shuttle era, reveals the remarkable creativity and ingenuity of nearly a century of flight and spacesuit design and development. The spacesuit was a critical piece of engineering that allowed Neil Armstrong to step onto another world and survive in the hostile environment of outer space. The Apollo spacesuit he wore evolved from the groundbreaking advances of the Gemini and Mercury mission suits, facilitating movement and dexterity in small spaces, remaining pressurized in zero gravity, and providing essential oxygen, heating, and cooling in as efficient a manner as possible.
