Fifty-two chukkers of Polo on the beach ended with a flourish on Sunday afternoon as the Yellow Cab team representing Russia (Tyler Garber, Tavi Usandizaga and Sebastian Merlos) scooped an impressive 12-5 win over The Raleigh team representing Pakistan (Bash Kazi, Juan Monteverde and Brandon Phillips) in the final of the 2014 La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup.  MVP Sebastian Merlos set the pace for Russia’s Yellow Cab with nine goals, including a two-pointer from one end of the arena, to lead all scoring.

Earlier in the day, the Merchant Hub team, representing Brazil (Tommy Kato, Pelon Escapite and Luis Escobar) won the Carl Fisher International Challenge Cup in an 8-5 win over the La Martina team, representing Argentina (MZ Kazi, David Tafuri, Carlitos Gracida and Tommy Biddle). Pelon Escapite took MVP honors with teammate Luis Escobar’s “Geevo” being named Best Playing Pony.
 
In the opening match of the day, the Metropolitan by COMO team, representing USA (lance Vetter, Guille Usandizaga and John Gobin) registered a 9-6 win over the Eden Roc team, representing Mexico (Jason Crowder, Mariano Gracida and Weston Gracida) in the final of the Fleischman Memorial Cup.

The tenth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup opened on April 24th with a long hot day of hard fought matches during the La Martina South Beach Women’s Polo Cup VI as women’s teams battled it out to claim the prestigious title.

The eight teams of women, consisting of players from all over the world, competed in two divisions of play for the sixth consecutive year with the team from La Martina (Scarlet Davenport, Maggie McNamara and Laura Willson) taking top honors in Division One with a 2-1 win over the Eden Roc/Cheeki team (Kaila Doud, Slaney O’Hanlon and Lynn O’Connor). Doud was named MVP while Laura Willson’s “Little Joe” received Best Playing Pony honors.
 
FontaineBleau Aviation (Lynda Mariano, Sabina Barnett and Kerstie Allen) won Division Two in convincing fashion, in a 7-1 defeat of the Jet Blue team (Coco Smith, Bobette Martin and Leah Masters).  Kerstie Allen scored all seven goals for FontaineBleau Aviation to earn MVP honors in her division, with her horse “Kai” taking Best Playing Pony honors.

The Polo Life, LLC presents the tenth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo competition, taking place from April 24th to April 27th, 2014 between 20th and 22nd streets on the sands of South Beach, Florida, with the support of The Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. Benefit Raises more than $500,000 for Robin Hood Foundation

This past weekend, more than 350 people gathered at the beautiful Equuleus Polo Club in Watermill, New York to cheer the return to the field of polo legend Nacho Figueras in a tournament benefiting New York’s Robin Hood Foundation. Figueras, who had been sidelined since May with a devastating hip injury, played alongside fellow world class polo players including Juan Martin Nero, Mariano Aguerre, Mariano Gonzalez and Magoo Laprida.

The ninth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup IX ended on Sunday, April 28th with a riveting men’s final that had the capacity crowd on the edge of their seats, as defending team champions, The Raleigh/Comcast, narrowly edged through to beat the La Martina team 12-10, to retain the coveted title. More than 10,000 people attended this year’s tournament over the four days that featured the world’s top professional polo players from as far as Russia, Switzerland and Malaysia, as well as the very best from South America.

The traditional post-event awards ceremony was held at the end of each tournament to celebrate the winning teams from both competitions, during which Robert Kiger, owner of Elegante Polo, presented the trophy to the women’s champions and Adrian Simonetti, president of La Martina, did the honors for the men’s.

2013 Champions Retain the Coveted Trophy

The ninth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo competition, culminated on Sunday afternoon in a tense final match between the tournament’s top two teams, resulting in a closely-fought win by defending champions The Raleigh/Comcast.

The Raleigh Hotel/Comcast team, comprised of Bash Kazi, John Gobin, Juan Monteverde and David Totari, trailed by two goals at halftime but exploded with six third chukker goals to ride past a talented La Martina foursome, consisting of Santi Torres, Carlos Gracida and Guillermo Steta, to win 12-10 in the final afternoon match.

The two teams fought to a 3-3 tie in the opening chukker with La Martina’s Santi Torres scoring the opening goal of the match before converting on a two-point shot from midfield. The Raleigh/Comcast scored a pair of goals from Juan Monteverde (one on a penalty shot) and a single goal from John Gobin for the 3-3 score.

Pro Hall of Famer Carlos Gracida took the reins in the second period, scoring on a two-point shot from over 50 yards out and a single goal to give La Martina a 6-4 halftime advantage. Monteverde scored The Raleigh/Comcast team’s only goal of the chukker. The Raleigh/Comcast team took control of the game in the third period with six goals. Gobin scored twice from the arena and added a 2-pointer. Monteverde scored twice in the chukker for a 10-8 lead. Torres and Gracida scored single goals for La Martina who trailed for the first time all day.

La Martina fought to get back in to the game in the fourth and final period, the Raleigh/Comcast team’s defense was up to the task. La Martina scored two goals from Torres but responded with single goals from Gobin and Monteverde for the 12-10 victory. Gobin and Monteverde scored six goals apiece for the Raleigh/Comcast team. Gobin was named MVP for the final match. Santi Torres’ mare “Mary West” received Best Playing Pony honors.

The ninth annual La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup, the world’s largest and most prestigious Beach Polo competition, opened with a day of sweat and tears during the La Martina South Beach Women’s Polo Cup V as eight women’s teams fought hard to claim the prestigious title.

Team Cheeki, consisting of Whitney Ross, Cristina Hosmer and Tiffany Busch, fell behind The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue team, 3-1 but scored five goals in the final chukker to capture the coveted trophy. Cheeki made their way in to the finals on an opening 6-0 win over The Raleigh Hotel team, while The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue trio defeated an aggressive Team Grey Goose side, 13-1.

The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue team took an early lead in the two chukker final getting a pair of goals from Laura Willson and a single score from Alicia Harden. Cheeki was limited to a single penalty goal in the chukker by Tiffany Busch.

Cheeky rallied in the final chukker, taking advantage of The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue team’s fouls to score five goals — three on penalty conversions by Tiffany Busch and single goals from Cristina Hosmer and Whitney Ross. The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue team came up with a single goal from Alicia Harden in the 6-4 loss.

Cheeki’s Tiffany Busch earned MVP honors for her efforts while The James Royal Palm Hotel/Jet Blue team’s Laura Willson’s horse “Dash” was named Best Playing Pony.

In Lower Bracket matches, the W South Beach Hotel, made up of Marina Wambold, Slaney O’Hanlon and Courtney Asdourian, scorched the team of Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ by a score of 9-0 in the finals. The W South Beach Hotel polo team earned an impressive 8-3 opening round win over La Martina to make in to the finals.  SLH snuck past a talented E! Entertainment team 3-2.

Courtney Asdourian scored an impressive seven of the team’s nine goals and was named MVP. Maggi McNamara’s horse “Stare” was honored as Best Playing Pony.

The three-day men’s tournament kicks-off the second day of the La Martina Miami Beach Polo World Cup on Friday, April 26th, with eight teams vying for the coveted trophy, ending on Sunday.
