Thanksgiving weekend draws nearly 190 million shoppers, spending up 16 percent
Retail sales in November, and especially around the Thanksgiving/Black Friday period are some of the most important sales data in all of retail. And this year’s numbers are even more important than ever before.
Per the analysts at the National Retail Federation, retail sales in November increased 0.1 percent seasonally adjusted over October and were up 2.1 percent unadjusted year-over-year, marking the first half of the holiday season with billions of dollars in shopping left to be done. The numbers exclude automobile dealers, gasoline stations and restaurants.
“November showed modest growth on the surface, but you have to remember that the late timing of Thanksgiving delayed the beginning of the busiest portion of the holiday season and pushed Cyber Monday’s billions of dollars of retail sales into December,” NRF Chief Economist Jack Kleinhenz said. “These numbers are more about the calendar than consumer confidence. Consumer spending has been solid, and there’s still a lot of spending to be done. With strong employment and higher wages, we’re on track for a strong holiday season.”
Kleinhenz noted that the year-over-year comparison was challenging because November 2018 was up an unusually strong 4.7 percent over the year before. But December 2018 was down 0.2 percent from the year before, making it likely that next month could show a strong comparison.
In addition, many consumers began their shopping early this year, with some starting before November. NRF surveys showed that 39 percent planned to begin by Halloween, and that consumers on average had completed 52 percent of their shopping as of the Thanksgiving Day weekend.
“Whether they’re looking for something unique on Main Street, making a trip to the mall or clicking from the couch, this is when holiday shoppers shift into high gear.” – NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay
NRF’s forecast predicts that holiday retail sales during November and December will increase between 3.8 percent and 4.2 percent for a total of between $727.9 billion and $730.7 billion.
November’s results build on October’s increase of 0.2 percent month-over-month and a strong 4.1 percent year-over-year. As of November, the three-month moving average was up 3.3 percent over the same period a year ago, compared with 4.2 percent in October.
NRF’s numbers are based on data from the U.S. Census Bureau, which said today that overall November sales – including auto dealers, gas stations and restaurants – were up 0.2 percent seasonally adjusted from October and up 3.3 percent unadjusted year-over-year.
Specifics from key retail sectors during November include:
Online and other non-store sales were up 7.2 percent year-over-year and up 0.8 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Sporting goods stores were up 4.3 percent year-over-year but down 0.5 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Grocery and beverage stores were up 4 percent year-over-year and up 0.3 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Furniture and home furnishings stores were up 1.4 percent year-over-year and up 0.1 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
General merchandise stores were unchanged year-over-year but up 0.1 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Building materials and garden supply stores were down 1.2 percent year-over-year but unchanged month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Electronics and appliance stores were down 1.7 percent year-over-year but up 0.7 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Health and personal care stores were also down 1.7 percent year-over-year and were down 1.1 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
Clothing and clothing accessory stores were down 2.9 percent year-over-year and down 0.6 percent month-over-month seasonally adjusted.
And the good news, such as it is, continued into the proceeding Thanksgiving Day weekend. A record 189.6 million U.S. consumers shopped from Thanksgiving Day through Cyber Monday this year, an increase of 14 percent over last year’s 165.8 million, the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics said.
“Americans continue to start their holiday shopping earlier in the year, and Thanksgiving is still a critical weekend for millions,” NRF President and CEO Matthew Shay said. “Whether they’re looking for something unique on Main Street, making a trip to the store or searching for the best deals from their mobile device, this is when shoppers shift into high gear. With the condensed holiday season, consumers are feeling the pressure to get their shopping done in time. Even those who typically wait until the last minute to purchase gifts turned out in record numbers all weekend long.”

In partnership with SoGal Ventures and powered by b8ta, seven Macy’s stores nationwide feature products from women-owned small businesses
This season, holiday shoppers can find the perfect gift at Macy’s from a host of female-led small businesses in the SoGifted shops at seven Macy’s locations nationwide. The SoGifted shops are made possible via a partnership with SoGal Ventures, the first female-led millennial venture capital fund investing in diverse entrepreneurs in the United States. Macy’s recently became a strategic partner with SoGal through a minority stake in the fund. The SoGifted shops feature a selection of products and gifts from women-founded brands in the SoGal community including Lovevery, toys designed by experts for your child’s developing brain, Neely & Chloe, a fashion-forward accessories range, and HidrateSpark 3, a smart water bottle that tracks your hydration, among others.
Open through January 2020, the SoGifted Concept Shops give Macy’s shoppers access to new brands that define what SoGal stands for: entrepreneurship, equality, and empowerment of diverse enterprises. Today, SoGal co-founders Elizabeth Galbut and Pocket Sun guide more than 65 companies, reaching a network of more than 100,000 entrepreneurs in an excess of 30 countries.

SoGal Ventures is the first female-led millennial venture capital firm. Galbut and Sun started this fund after experience as entrepreneurs and venture capitalists. They believe in the power of diversity, borderless business, and human-centric design. SoGal invests in early stage diverse founding teams in the U.S. and Asia, aiming to be the strongest ally for their portfolio companies. Powered by the SoGal Ecosystem across 40+ cities around the world, they are galvanizing a brand-new demographic – millennial & Gen Z women and minorities – to take center stage in entrepreneurship and creation.

“Our mission is to build a firm that embodies the cultural values that we want to see in the world,” said Galbut. “With the partnership at Macy’s we’re taking this a step further and giving in-store shoppers across the country an opportunity to discover and support female-led small business brands – so the next generation of women can be empowered to know that entrepreneurship is within their reach,” added Galbut.
This type of brand discovery spotlights Macy’s ongoing partnership with b8ta, operator of the Ark Marketplace platform that allows brands that traditionally haven’t operated stores to quickly set up new physical retail operations. The b8ta-powered experience enabled SoGal’s range of entrepreneurs to activate at Macy’s within a matter of weeks – with products ranging from Bon Temps herbal teas to unbreakable hosiery by Sheertex.

On the more traditional gifting side, Ettitude introduces sustainable bamboo pajamas and bedding essentials, OK Jewelry showcases its affordable high-end fashion jewelry, and Quirktastic supplies geek-chic graphic tees – perfect for the comics lover in your life.

The Peninsula Hotels has announced a calendar of fun festive activities and experiences for all to enjoy this season, including bountiful brunches brimming with festive fare; celebratory cocktails crafted by on-site mixologists; gingerbread making classes led by each hotels’ professional pastry chefs; and live story-telling sessions of The Peninsula’s digital storybook for children ‘The Gingerbread Man’s Tale,’ available to download on a complimentary basis via Peninsula.com’s festive webpage.
Six Festive Ornaments
Putting The Spice Back Into Life The hero and leading character of this year’s story – which has been specially written for The Peninsula Hotels – is the Gingerbread Man. A familiar sight hanging within decorated trees, the Gingerbread Man represents the ‘Stories from within the Tree’ chapter of The Peninsula Hotels’ three-year festive campaign titled ‘Stories from the Tree’.
A Digital Children Storybook
After kicking-off with ‘Stories from Under the Tree’ last year and closing with ‘Stories from the Tree Top’ next year, this year’s theme is about sharing the joy and fun of the season. Adding a Scandinavian touch to the festivities, The Peninsula Hong Kong will welcome Santa Claus from Finland Santa Claus Village on December 11 at The Lobby as the Grande Dame joins hands with Finnair this winter. More collaboration will be announced by the end of December 2019 for a truly Nordic celebration.
Christmas Gifts and Kid: Sharing the joy at The Peninsula Hotels
In line with this, the magic of the festive season will be celebrated at each of the ten Peninsula hotels around the globe with giant Christmas trees erected in the grand lobbies, and resplendent decorations on view for all to enjoy. To prolong the festive joy throughout the season, the hotel mascot, The Peninsula Bear will appear at The Lobby, giving adorable surprises spontaneously to guests.
Gingerbread Making Class at The Peninsula Hotels
A Time Of Reflection Often, the joy and fun of the season is felt most strongly by the children in our lives. In support of those less fortunate, the six ‘Stories from the Tree’ characters will be available to purchase at each hotel in the form of tree decorations and pins, with US$5 from each purchase being donated to Make-A-Wish® Hong Kong and Room to Read. Make-A-Wish® Hong Kong, an organization that grants one life-changing wishes for children aged between three and 17 with critical illnesses in Hong Kong and Macau, to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. Room to Read, a global organization transforming the lives of millions of children in low-income communities by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.

All
are welcome to kick off the holiday season with the much-anticipated
Tree Lighting against the skyline at the Philadelphia
Museum of Art on Wednesday, November 27. Enjoy free live
music, complimentary candy canes and warm beverages on the East
Terrace starting at 5:00 p.m. With the official countdown set for
5:50 p.m., 12,000 LED lights will illuminate the stately 55-foot-tall
white fir on the terrace.

The
Tree Lighting once again headlines the museum’s holiday
program, which continues through the close of 2019 with events
ranging from holiday card making, caroling through the galleries, and
celebratory dining to a Feliz Navidad Fiesta and a Festival
of Lights.
“It
promises to be a spectacular Tree Lighting, and we invite everyone to
join us here at the museum, where admission—following the
countdown—will be Pay-What-You-Wish until 8:45 p.m., as it is every
Wednesday evening,” said Timothy Rub, the museum’s
George D. Widener Director and CEO, who will officiate with
the Honorable Jim Kenney, Mayor of Philadelphia. “This
event brings out so many families and friends – last year’s Tree
Lighting drew a record 3300 well-wishers—and we invite everyone to
join us for what promises to be a festive evening full of community
spirit.”

Mayor
Kenney said, “This Tree Lighting ceremony has become a
Philadelphia tradition that attracts so many people to our historic
museum every year. It looks spectacular, high above the Ben Franklin
Parkway. From the look on kids’ faces, it has to be one of the
happiest occasions in our city that every Philadelphian can enjoy the
day before the iconic Thanksgiving Day Parade. I look forward to
taking part in this year’s festivities.”
“We’ve
been rehearsing our classics like Let It Snow and Jingle Bells but
also some of the lesser known Christmas songs, by Louis Armstrong and
Ella Fitzgerald,” said Chelsea Reed of Chelsea Reed
and the Fairweather Nine. “I’m so excited to share all of
these with the people of Philadelphia!”

Inside
the museum, right after the Tree Lighting, visitors will be able to
stroll through the galleries and public spaces adorned with seasonal
decorations and enjoy festive foods and beverages. “Sister
Cities Girlchoir is looking forward to performing inside the museum,”
said founder Alysia Lee. “There’s no better way to top off
Philadelphia’s Tree Lighting than to get warm and cozy in the Great
Stair Hall, where the girls will bring their unique blend of songs of
empowerment, celebration, and meditation as they perform with such
grace under the majestic gilded statue of the Roman goddess Diana.”

Down
at the street level next to Kelly Drive, the newly reopened
North Entrance, leading to the celebrated Vaulted Walkway,
is already decorated with evergreens for the holidays. Visitors may
enter there any time during museum hours and begin their holiday
shopping, too, in the new Main Store, access to which paid
admission is not required. On November 27, the Store will offer a 20
percent discount from 5 p.m. until 8:45 p.m.
(The
museum’s East Entrance remains open during public hours and the
West Entrance is now closed until fall 2020.)

Each
year, the holiday tree provides a magnificent spectacle overlooking
the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. Planning for its placement
requires exceptional coordination. The Philly-bound evergreen makes a
300-mile trip, wheeling in from Hornell, New York, on a flatbed
truck. The 7500-pound tree is craned upright upon a platform; it is
then unwrapped, branching out to a 25 foot-wide-spread. Next, it is
adorned with thousands of lights, each one at .144watts, all powered
by (2) 20amp circuits. High on the apex of the tree, a star is
placed, measuring 6 feet in diameter and containing 175 lights
itself.

Acquiring
and installing the tree and generating the lighting would not be
possible without dedicated support. Seasonal decor is generously
provided by IBEW, Local 98, Dougherty Electric, Inc., PMC Property

White Millefeuille, La Dame de Pic London, Four Seasons Hotel London at Ten Trinity Square
Its
first broadcast appearance on BBC’s Masterchef: The
Professionals launched Chef Anne-Sophie Pic’s take on
the classic “thousand leaves” dessert to social media stardom.
Crack into its pristine façade to expose layers of crispy
triple-folded puff pastry, Tahitian vanilla cream and jasmine jelly.
A sheet of royal icing covers the delicacy for added crunch, while
dollops of voatsiperifery pepper-infused milk foam flank either side.
The dazzling dessert fuses purity, lightness and surprise, easily
earning the title of most Instagrammed dish in the two Michelin star
restaurant.
Roasted Scampi Surrounded by Chef’s Garden, Il Lago, Four Seasons Hotel des Bergues Geneva
In
this complex piece of culinary art, 35 different vegetables are
featured in various preparations, inspired by memories of Chef
Massimiliano Sena’s childhood on Italy’s Sorrento Coast. The
vibrant plate features roast scampi served in its own bisque
surrounded by a garden of seasonal produce and topped with a squid
ink tuile. Within the first hour of its social media debut, Sena’s
star dish generated incredible intrigue, garnering more than 100k
views on Instagram and encouraging eager tasters to visit
Michelin-starred Il Lago to see and taste the work of art first hand.
Spaghetti with Ham, Ceps and Black Truffle, Le Cinq, Four Seasons Hotel George V, Paris

Le Cinq, Chef Christian Le Squer’s luxurious take on a much-loved
classic never fails to impress. Profiled on France’s Top Chef
and online in French Vogue, a dedicated @fsgeorgevparis
Instagram story achieved more than 12.5k views, while a post on
@lecinqparis earned the most-liked photo of the year. Perfectly al
dente noodles are tossed in butter and parmesan and carefully laid
out side by side to form the walls of a rectangle. Inside, ham,
truffles and cep mushrooms are glazed in jus and drizzled with
truffled cream. Topped with a thin parmesan crust and adorned with
gold leaf, this rich, savoury and tender architectural masterpiece is
served throughout the year and is a “must-try before you die” for
Parisians and international travellers alike.
Haute Chocolate, Pastry Chef Andrew Schweska, The Remedy Bar and Flame Restaurant, Four Seasons Resort and Residences Vail
Recently
voted one of the world’s best hot chocolates by Travel +
Leisure, a video of its epic marshmallow drop amassed the highest
number of organic views on Four Seasons Instagram channel in 2018. At
any given time, someone is eagerly taking a slow-motion capture of
the suspenseful splash in Vail’s The Remedy Bar, Flame Restaurant
or in the comfort of their guest room or private retreat. Piping hot
Valrhona chocolate, heavy cream and steamed whole milk are churned
tableside and poured over a hand-made dark chocolate lattice,
resulting in a perfectly-timed marshmallow plummet and pillowy

that include untimed, skip-the-line tickets, which allow access to
the exhibition even if the date is sold out to the general public;
these packages can be found at https://monetindenver.com.

Innovative
digital graffiti and visuals transform the landscape of E.T.A.
Hoffmann‘s beloved story from traditional 19th Century Germany to
the vibrant, diverse sights and sounds of contemporary New York City.
Through this re-mixed and re-imagined version of the classic,
performed at Buell Theater in the Denver Performing Arts
Complex, the dynamic performers of The Hip Hop Nutcracker take
audience members on a journey that celebrates love, community and the
magic of a New Year.

America have been delighted by this heart-warming holiday musical,
featuring the hit songs “You’re A Mean One Mr. Grinch”
and “Welcome Christmas” from the original animated
TV special. Max the Dog narrates as the mean and scheming
Grinch, whose heart is “two sizes too small,” decides to
steal Christmas away from the holiday-loving Whos. Magnificent sets
and costumes inspired by Dr. Seuss’ original illustrations transport
audiences to the whimsical world of Whoville and helps remind them of

McCallister, an eight-year-old boy who is accidentally left
behind when his family leaves for Christmas vacation, and who must
defend his home against two bungling thieves (Joe Pesci and
Daniel Stern). Hilarious and heartwarming, Home Alone
is holiday fun for the whole family.

The
collection commences with a limited-edition Snow White-inspired
timepiece showcased two-tone stainless steel and gold tone case and

between the 3 and 4 o’clock markers. One diamond and one red
Swarovski Genuine Topaz dance freely among the unique outer ring
designs allowing them to interplay with light on the wrist. The
timepiece is complete with the iconic phrase “Fairest of them all”
noted on the case back.
From
the Disney classic, Beauty and the Beast, Citizen’s new
Belle inspired watch is showcased in rose gold-tone stainless
steel with a beautiful mother of pearl dial. A rose seen in a
bell jar is embellished in gold detailing paying homage to the
enchanted scene. A collection of diamonds is placed on the dial while
a single diamond and yellow Swarovski Genuine Topaz move freely along
the outer ring. Etched on the case back is a reminder to always “Find
the beauty inside.”
For
the Princess who never stopped dreaming, Cinderella is honored
in the collection with a stainless-steel timepiece that dazzles
with a blue gradient mother of pearl dial. The exquisite dial
features Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage etched in silver print.
Complete with Roman numeral indexes, whimsical hands, and a singular
diamond placed at the 12 o’clock position, the timepiece is
finished with “A dream is a wish your heart makes” on the case
back.
Citizen

of pearl dial. The dial showcases her majestic fin etched in a
shimmering print and a clam shell embellished with a diamond on the
12 o’clock marker. Freely floating on the outer ring is a diamond
and purple Swarovski Genuine Topaz. “Above the waves adventure
awaits” graces the case back of the timepiece.

Drink and Be Merry with These Crowd-Pleasing Holiday Cocktails
The
holiday season is known as the most wonderful time of the year, but
sometimes entertaining can lead to more stress and mess than fun and
festivities. A little organization and planning, such as having a
well-stocked home bar and a few simple beverage recipes on hand, will
help to take the pressure out of the season and keep gatherings merry
and bright.
Master
mixologist Julia Momose, owner and Bar Director of the
celebrated Chicago bar Kumiko, knows a thing or two about
creating crowd-pleasing cocktails and spirit-free beverages that are
sure to delight family and friends during the holiday season. Momose
believes that cocktail making should be fun, rather than
intimidating, and that being prepared for holidays with a few basic
bar ingredients, like honey, can set the stage for effortless holiday
entertaining.
Momose favors the ease of honey to achieve well-balanced holiday beverages and has partnered with the National Honey Board to share how she incorporates it while entertaining at home and at Kumiko.
Julia
Momose has been in the service industry for close to 15 years,
starting her career as a student in Japan. When she moved to America
for university, she continued to work in the service industry,
training in all facets of hospitality. Currently she resides in
Chicago, where she worked as the head bartender at GreenRiver
Restaurant and Bar
in Chicago. During her time there, GreenRiver was awarded its first
Michelin star. In 2017, Momose partnered with the team at Oriole
in Chicago to open a bar based on the philosophy of a thoughtful
experience filled with deep appreciation and understanding of
craftmanship. Momose’s newest venture is Kumiko,
based on her Japanese heritage and a meticulous appreciation for
details, located in Chicago’s West Loop neighborhood. It offers a
unique perspective on the notion of a bar, through a remarkable
experience of dining and drinking. Time
Magazine named
Kumiko on its
2019 list of World’s Greatest Places and
Bon
Appetit
included it as a nominee on its 2019
America’s Best New Restaurants List.
Momose
favors the ease of honey to achieve well-balanced holiday beverages
and has partnered with the National Honey Board to share how
she incorporates it while entertaining at home and at Kumiko. Because
the flavor of honey is affected by the floral source that the bees
have foraged, there are more than 300 varietals of honey in the US
alone. The nuanced flavors of different honey varietals not only add
to its versatility, but also pair well with different spirits and are
the secret to many of Momose’s favorite cocktail and spirit-free
recipes.
“From
the lightness of a clover varietal to the richness of buckwheat,
honey brings a wide range of flavors that complete any beverage,”
said Momose. “Honey is in constant use at Kumiko, and at home
too. This holiday season, I’ll be experimenting with honey varietals
to create special drinks that will be sure to be crowd-pleasers at
gatherings.”
To
inspire stress-free cheer this holiday season, Momose is sharing some
of her favorite honey-based beverages:
Mixing
orange blossom honey with cold brew coffee and gin, Momose creates a
Honey’d
Coffee G&T.
For a festive brunch bar, she recommends setting up several honey
varietals with an assortment of single-origin cold brew coffees,
gin, and tonic, and allowing guests to pick and choose their coffee
and honey for a customized experience.
To
create her own spin on a holiday season favorite, a hot toddy,
Momose combines honey, chamomile and spices in a soothin Spiced
Honey Toddy that
is not only easy to make, but is also warm and soothing on a chilly
Chicago night.
A
hit with Momose’s family and friends during the festive season, The
Berries and Bees combines
honey, blackberries and whisky for a warming, uplifting cocktail
that can be quickly made day or night.
The
spirit-free Bright
One with
honey, yuzu juice and ginger beer creates a refreshing beverage that
will ensure that you wake up feeling refreshed.
In
addition to her recipes, Momose offers tips to easily create
crowd-pleasing beverages during the holiday season and beyond:
Preparing
the perfect cocktail is about balancing three critical elements:
sweetness,
fullness and
flavor.
While balancing sweet with bitter or sweet with acid is a critical
element to drink making, so is finding ingredients that provide a
pleasant texture and roundness.
Preparation
is key,
because you never know who may happen to drop by during the
holidays. Having a well-stocked bar at home will ensure that you
have the ingredients you need to create a well-balanced beverage.
The must-haves for any bar include:
Several
varietals of honey – including wildflower,
clover
and blueberry
– help to offset the intensity of the spirit and add flavor to the
cocktail.
Extra-credit
liquor,
like vermouth
and orange
liqueur,
can be combined with mixers like sodas, tonic water and bitters to
create a beverage that feels special.
Fresh
citrus,
berries
and herbs
are easy to keep on hand and make great garnishes to put the
finishing touch on a cocktail.
When
making a spirit-free, it is all about layering flavors.
Instead of using a traditional simple syrup made with granulated
sugar, experiment with honey, which is naturally sweeter than sugar,
and provides flavor and richness.
For
more information about how Momose uses just a drizzle of honey in her
favorite beverages, visit www.honey.com.

The
National Honey Board (NHB) is
an industry-funded agriculture promotion group that works to educate
consumers about the benefits and uses for honey and honey products
through research, marketing and promotional programs. The Board’s
work, funded by an assessment on domestic and imported honey, is
designed to increase the awareness and usage of honey by consumers,
the foodservice industry and food manufacturers. The

‘I am connected to the idea of unity, togetherness and challenging the perception of what love is today. This for me is the real spirit of the season. It’s one of my favorite times of the year – when I can stop, reflect and reconnect with those who make me feel happy and at home, no matter where I am in the world. I loved the idea of bringing together a group of people that have been so supportive of me since I joined Burberry to celebrate my first holiday campaign for the house,” states Riccardo Tisci, Burberry Chief Creative Officer.

“It
was a real pleasure working on this project for Burberry. Working
with Riccardo is about connection, it’s about the back and forth of
discussing creative ideas and it’s this that makes our jobs even
more interesting and exciting. We have been friends for many years so
I guess we know each other’s sensibilities – there are always a
lot of laughs!” says Mert and Alas. “My favourite
Christmas memory is when we were preparing a Christmas dinner and the
oven literally blew up! I burnt my lashes and of course we had no
turkey. Disappointing, but it was a funny night!”
And
the cast itself seems to have had a fun and memorable time as well.

CARLA
BRUNI: “I love the
concept of the campaign – this big group of different people coming
together. I had a fabulous time with Riccardo and was thrilled to
find myself behind the lens of Mert & Marcus again. On set,
Riccardo gave me this feeling of freedom and modernity – his talent
is beyond words. You can see that he has this profound and precious
knowledge of fashion, and has this simplistic way of using the past
to invent the future. My most precious festive memory is a Christmas
Eve in a castle completely buried in snow in Touraine.”
