The
26th Annual
Austin Film Festival
(AFF), the premier film festival recognizing writers’
and filmmakers’ contributions to film, television, theatre and new
media, announced its Opening Night
feature, The Obituary of Tunde Johnson, taking place October
24, 2019. Director Ali LeRoi
will present the film alongside screenwriter Stanley
Kalu. The film is LeRoi’s feature directorial debut, and Kalu’s
first produced feature screenplay. Kalu won The
LAUNCH: Million Dollar Screenplay Competition in 2018,
co-founded by Zachary Green and Jason Shuman. Along
with receiving a $50,000 education grant and literary representation,
Kalu’s film was produced by Green, Shuman and philanthropists
Chuck and Marni Bond.
The
Obituary of Tunde Johnson follows Tunde Johnson (portrayed by
Steven Silver), a gay, black teenager trapped in a time loop that
forces him to relive his own brutal murder at the hands of a police
officer on duty. The film made its World Premiere at 2019
Toronto International Film Festival. LeRoi and Kalu will
participate in a post-film Q&A following the screening and
will also take part in programming as panelists at the AFF Writers
Conference.
AFF also proudly announces an additional Marquee feature, Atlantics. Atlantics, a haunting romance set in Senegal, is the feature directorial debut of Mati Diop. The film was awarded the Sutherland Award at the BFI London Film Festival as well as the Grand Prix at Cannes Film Festival earlier this year. The film will screen Sunday October 27, 2019 at 2:30pm at the Alamo Drafthouse Village. Atlantics will premiere in theaters November 15, 2019 and on Netflix November 29, 2019.
The
Festival’s shorts programming blocks include Wanted: Strong
Woman, in which a woman finds a new passion, Black Goat,
the story of a girl’s dark coming of age ritual, Robu, a
young man’s journey through Japan to recover a special manga, and
Digital Series Brothers from the Suburbs, a comedy centered on
three black high schoolers. The Festival is also screening short
films The Shabbos Goy, a comedy from Paul Feig, Laura
Fischer’s Powderkeg Fuse incubator, Bye Bye Body,
an introspective look at body positivity, and family drama Jane.
Other mentionable shorts include the University of Texas filmmakers’
Femenina, which tells the story of a wrestler’s grappling
with his own sexuality, and Super Sonic, a romance cultivated
beyond one man’s hearing-impairment.

Founded
on a unique insight of Skin Intelligence, the skin’s innate
ability to distinguish between bad and good stimuli, and also the
ability of skin cells to transmit the information among themselves,
La Crème harnesses a deep understanding of skin cell behavior
to deliver exceptional results. Recrafted eight times since its
launch in 1982, each version of La Crème is advanced with the
latest discoveries from Clé de Peau Beauté‘s ongoing

Recrafted eight time since its launch, La Crème is poised to launch in Spring/Summer 2020
The
new La Crème features a highly potent blend of a proprietary
complex: the Skin-Empowering Illuminator, which comprises a
powerhouse blend of five key ingredients: Platinum Golden Silk
Essence, Japanese Pearl Shell Extract, Theanine, Perilla Extract and
Angelica Acutiloba Extract, helping to amplify Skin
Intelligence and enhance skin’s ability to repair and defend
itself from damage caused by various stressors.
In
addition, the revitalized formulation contains the new CeraFerment
Extract which is crafted from a yeast that was discovered in
Japan’s Akita Prefecture and enhances skin’s ability to regenerate
and become firm from within.
La
Crème’s exceptionally rich and luxuriant texture was crafted by
masters over multiple days in a precise multi-step process and highly
measured approach, meticulously blending over sixty curated
ingredients to unlock an inner radiance and effectively improve skin
for an appearance that feels rejuvenated with youthful density in 12
weeks[1].
Ms Yukari Suzuki, Clé de Peau Beauté Chief Brand Officer, Ms Felicity Jones, Clé de Peau Beauté Global Brand Ambassador and Mr Katsunori Yoshida, Clé de Peau Beauté Lab Chief Technology Officer celebrate the launch of the new La Crème at a private gala dinner hosted at Corinthia Hotel London
The

where over 100 key editors, influencers and retailers from around the
world were hosted by Yukari Suzuki, Chief Brand Officer for Clé
de Peau Beauté, and Katsunori Yoshida, Chief Technology
Officer of the Clé de Peau Beauté Laboratory.
The event was a physical celebration of La Crème’s promise of radiance

radiance, was the perfect setting where technology and light were
fully deployed to create an interactive and holistic brand experience
— each touch point highlighting the milestones Clé de Peau Beauté
achieved in pushing boundaries in science and innovation. Guests were
brought through digital and interactive multimedia installations that
showcased the brand journey, the evolution of La Crème and

new scientific frontiers to deliver a radiance so remarkable that it
emanates from within.”
The
launch was also celebrated with a gala dinner at the Corinthia
Hotel London, which Clé de Peau Beauté co-hosted with
their global brand ambassador, Felicity Jones.
The
High Museum of Art has been selected as a 2019 Bank of
America Art Conservation Project grant recipient for a project to
conserve artwork by renowned contemporary artist Thornton Dial
(American, 1928–2016). The High holds the largest public
collection of Dial’s work, including paintings and assemblages
spanning his entire 30-year career, which represents a cornerstone of
the Museum’s unparalleled folk and self-taught art department.
The
High is dedicated to supporting and collecting works by Southern
artists and is distinguished as the first general art museum in North
America to have a full-time curator devoted to folk and self-taught
art. The nucleus of the folk and self-taught art collection is the
T. Marshall Hahn Collection, donated in 1996, and Judith
Alexander’s gift of 130 works by Atlanta artist Nellie Mae
Rowe. The High’s folk and self-taught art department features
works by such renowned artists as Dial, Bill Traylor, Ulysses
Davis, Sam Doyle, William Hawkins, Mattie Lou O’Kelley and
Louis Monza as well as the largest collection of works by
Georgia’s Howard Finster outside of Paradise Garden
in Summerville, Georgia. The collection of more than 1,000 objects
also boasts superb examples by celebrated artists from beyond the
South, including Henry Darger, Martín Ramírez and Joseph
Yoakum.
Dial
used a wide range of media, including metals, wood, textiles and
plastics. Due to the interactions between these materials, as well as
the fact that most are repurposed from previous use, his works
require analysis and treatment to improve their condition. In
addition, as a master of complexly layered surfaces, Dial created
works that are always in danger of loose parts.
With
the grant funds, the Museum will conduct a full assessment of these
works using analytical and imaging techniques to capture each work’s
intricacy and create a baseline understanding of Dial’s fabrication
practices and how his materials have deteriorated over time. The
groundbreaking conservation project, under the direction of Katherine
Jentleson, the High’s Merrie and Dan Boone curator of folk and
self-taught art, will focus on treating the Museum’s 10 most
complex Dial works, which span nearly two decades. Assessment will
begin in November 2019, and conservation will be completed by
November 2020.
The
High Museum of Art was one of the first museums to acquire
Dial’s art, beginning in the 1990s with mixed–media works,
including “Struggling Tiger Know His Way Out” (1991),
which is the earliest work being treated as part of this project. In
2017, the High received a stunning group of Dial’s assemblage
paintings as part of a major gift/purchase from the Souls Grown
Deep Foundation, including “Birmingham News” (1997)
and “Looking Out the Windows” (2002), which will also
undergo examination and treatment.
“We
believe that Dial is one of the seminal and most defining artists of
the 20th century, and it is essential that we preserve his artworks
for future generations,” said Rand Suffolk, Nancy and Holcombe
T. Greene, Jr., director of the High. “We are incredibly
grateful to Bank of America for selecting our conservation project
for this grant, which will allow us to give these works their due
attention and care.”
The
Art Conservation Project is a key element of Bank of America’s
program of arts support worldwide and part of the company’s
environmental, social and governance program.
For
more information, please visit the Art
Conservation Project website.
“We
believe in the power of the arts to help economies thrive, and we are
proud to expand our partnership with the High Museum of Art,”
said Wendy Stewart, Atlanta market president, Bank of America.
In
addition to preserving Dial’s assemblages, the conservation project
will also provide the basis for important scholarship on his
materials and methods and will establish protocols for the
conservation of his work, and for that of the entire spectrum of
self-taught artists working in non-traditional mixed media.
“Like
many contemporary artists, Dial did not limit himself to traditional
materials,” said Jentleson. “I am thrilled that, through
Bank of America’s generosity, we will be able to serve Dial’s
tremendous legacy but also make discoveries that will inform
treatments of complex works by a varied array of artists, both
self-taught and trained.”
Located
in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, the High Museum of Art connects
with audiences from across the Southeast and around the world through
its distinguished collection, dynamic schedule of special exhibitions
and engaging community-focused programs. Housed within facilities
designed by Pritzker Prize–winning architects
Richard Meier
and Renzo
Piano,
the High features a collection of more than 17,000 works of art,
including an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American
fine and decorative arts; major holdings of photography and folk and
self-taught work, especially that of artists from the American South;
burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, including
paintings, sculpture, new media and design; a growing collection of
African art, with work dating from pre-history through the present;
and significant holdings of European paintings and works on paper.
The High is dedicated to reflecting the diversity of its communities
and offering a variety of exhibitions and educational programs that
engage visitors with the world of art, the lives of artists and the
creative process. For

Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series and two
Critics’ Choice TV Awards for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy
Series. He was also awarded Best Actor at the 2015 Webby Awards and
Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy at the 2015 Gold Derby TV Awards.
The
actor was first introduced to television audiences in Tina Fey’s
Emmy®-winning NBC series 30 Rock, where he played the
scene-stealing ‘D’Fwan,’ a vivacious hairdresser and the
sidekick of Angie Jordan (Sherri Shepherd). Burgess
quickly became a breakout star in the series’ fifth and sixth
seasons. His other television credits include A Gifted Man, Blue
Bloods, and Royal Pains. On the big screen, Burgess
recently lent his voice to two major studio films: The Angry Birds
Movie and Smurfs: The Lost Village.
A
veteran of the stage, Burgess made his Broadway debut in 2005 as
Eddie in Good Vibrations. Since, he has held many
memorable roles on the Broadway stage including Hal Miller in
Jersey Boys, Sebastian the Crab in The Little Mermaid,
and Nicely-Nicely Johnson in the 2009 revival of Guys and
Dolls. Burgess has also performed in regional theater productions
such as The Wiz and Jesus Christ Superstar.
With
a celebrated high tenor voice, Burgess is an acclaimed singer and
songwriter, headlining major symphonies and top cabaret venues
throughout the world. In 2008, he performed at the Broadway for
Obama benefit concert in Easton, PA and the Broadway After
Dark benefit concert in New York City. In 2013, he performed a
gender-swapped version of the classic Dreamgirls song “And
I Am Telling You…” at the Broadway Cares/Equity Fights
AIDS fundraising concert for Broadway Backwards — a
performance that quickly became one of the highlights of the show.
In
addition, Burgess has built a rich solo music career. His most recent
album Saint Tituss was released in July 2019 and follows his
previous two albums, Here’s To You and Comfortable.
Later
this season, Mr.
Burgess will
make
his Carnegie Hall debut on February
1, 2020 at 8:00 p.m. in
Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage with a concert titled Take
Me to the World,
paying homage to the legendary music of
Stephen Sondheim.
