Co-Honoree is Maria-Elena Grant, Activist For The LGBTQ Community For More Than 25 Years

Big Apple Performing Arts (BAPA), the home of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus and Youth Pride Chorus, today announced the recipients of the Arts in Action Award and Gary Miller Award for 2016 to be presented at Harmony, New York City’s gala and party to benefit the NYCGMC and YPC on February 22, 2016 starting at 6 pm at the Diamond Horseshoe. The very first recipient of the newly created Arts in Action Award, to be given to an artist who has found success in the field of entertainment and uses that success to inspire change, is award winning writer and performer Lisa Kron, who most recently won two Tony Awards for her work as librettist and lyricist for the hit Broadway musical Fun Home.

Lisa Kron is a writer and performer whose work has been widely produced in New York, regionally, and internationally. She wrote the book and lyrics for musical Fun Home, with music by composer Jeanine Tesori, which won five Tony awards including best musical, Lortel, Obie, Drama Critics Circle and Outer Critics Circle awards for best musical, and was finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. Other plays includeThe Ver**zon Play; In The Wake (Lilly Award, Best Plays of 2010-2011 Theater Yearbook); Well (Best Plays of 2003-2004 Yearbook, 2006 Tony nom. for Best Actress); and 2.5 Minute Ride (Obie, L.A. Drama-Logue and GLAAD Media Awards). As an actor recent roles include Mrs. Mi-Tzu and Mrs. Yang in the Foundry Theater’s acclaimed production of Good Person of Szechuan (Lortel Award, Outstanding Featured Actress), and dance critic Walter Terry in Richard Move’s Martha @… The 1963 Interview at DTW, New York Live Arts and the Singapore International Festival of the Arts.

Honors include Guggenheim, Sundance and MacDowell fellowships, a Doris Duke Performing Artists Award, a Cal Arts/Alpert Award, a Helen Merrill Award, and grants from the Creative Capital and NYFA.  Kron is a founding member of the OBIE- and Bessie-Award-winning collaborative theater company The Five Lesbian Brothers whose plays continue to be performed by companies around the world and are regularly taught in Theater, Performance, and LGBT Studies programs.  She currently teaches in the graduate Dramatic Writing Department of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts. She serves on the boards of the McDowell Colony and the Lilly Awards, and on the Council of the Dramatists Guild of America.

The second recipient of the Gary Miller Award, given to someone who has made a significant contribution to LGBTQ arts in New York City and is named after the first conductor of the New York City Gay Men’s Chorus, is Maria-Elena Grant who has been an advocate for the LGBTQ community for more than 25 years. The award was given to its namesake, Gary Miller, at last year’s Harmony Gala.

Maria-Elena Grant was born in the UK and moved with her family to the Bronx in the late 1970s. In the early 80s, Grant co-founded Blues a social networking group for lesbians, the first of its kind in the borough. Moving to Brooklyn in 1993 with her partner, filmmaker Cyrille Phipps, She joined the POC Steering Committee, a group of LGBT organizations of color working to achieve better visibility for themselves within the community. In addition, Grant was a founding mother of The Audre Lorde Project and an early member of The Unity Fellowship Church, Brooklyn. She served for six years on the board of directors of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA), an organization representing over 40,000 singers worldwide.

Award winning British fashion designer, Dame Zandra Rhodes, who has dressed some the world’s most famous musicians, will treat guests to ‘an audience with’ as she discusses her impressive career.

Preparing to show her latest collection at London Fashion Week, the award designer spoke about her excitement at joining this special voyage:

“Guests are going to be able to look forward to a fantastic fashion experience,” said Rhodes. “I’m going to be doing a dress show, as well as doing a talk with the fabulous Colin McDowell. Guests will have the chance to dine with all these specialists in the industry, ask questions from us all. I’m there to enhance everyone’s experience.” 

Joining the line-up of fashion royalty is the highly respected fashion historian and commentator Colin McDowell and Fern Mallis, the ‘Godmother of Fashion‘ and founder of New York Fashion Week.

Colin McDowell MBE, Fashion Historian; Fashion historian and style commentator, Colin McDowell has been in the fashion business for over 40 years. McDowell was a fashion writer of the London Sunday Times and during that time he also wrote for every major newspaper in the United Kingdom. In 2004 he set up first initiative to support and mentor young designers in London. Called Fashion Fringe, it has influenced and been adopted as the way to train young people across the globe.

A noted academic he has published 23 books in fashion and style related subjects including his latest which are Fashion Today and the Anatomy of Fashion.

Dame Zandra Rhodes CBE, Fashion Designer: Zandra Rhodes was one of the New Wave of British Designers who put London at the forefront of the international Fashion Scene in the 70’s. Zandra has designed for clients as diverse as Diana, Princess of Wales, Jackie Onassis, Elizabeth Taylor and Freddie Mercury of the rock group ‘Queen’.

She continues to clothe and design for the rich and famous around the world from royalty to rock stars including: HRH Princess Michael of Kent, Debbie Harry, Bianca Jagger, Kylie Minogue, Anastasia, Paris Hilton, the late Joan Rivers and the late Isabella Blow.

Since 2000 Zandra’s career has diversified into designing sets and costumes for the opera. In 2003 Zandra founded The Fashion & Textile Museum in Bermondsey Street, London. She was made a Commander of the British Empire in 1997 in recognition of her contributions to fashion and textiles and this year has been made a Dame in the Queen’s latest Honours list and most recently opened the September 2015 London Fashion Week.

Oscar® winners Morgan Freeman and John Legend have been added to the list of presenters along with J.J. Abrams, Sacha Baron Cohen and Henry Cavill for the 88th Oscars® telecast. Oscar producers David Hill and Reginald Hudlin also announced a special performance by Dave Grohl for the event, hosted by Chris Rock, airing live Oscar Sunday, February 28, on ABC.

The most recent list of presenters marks the return of Baron Cohen, Freeman and Legend. Abrams, Cavill and Grohl take to the Oscar stage for the first time.

This year’s “The Oscars® Backstage” on Oscar.com, which is the ultimate second screen experience for fans watching the show, will be hosted by a multi-talented group of TV personalities, including actor/writer/producer Orlando Jones, actress and TV personality Diane Mizota, actor Matt Shively, film critic and entertainment reporter Ben Lyons, and entertainment and sports reporter Chris Connelly. The director’s cut from the best of the live backstage cameras will also be available on ABCNews.com, AOL, Comcast Xfinity and Yahoo.

Presented again this year by Samsung, “The Oscars® Backstage” allows fans to choose from four channels that will pull from more than 20 live cameras strategically placed on the red carpet and backstage at the Dolby Theatre®, providing fans with insider views into the most memorable moments of the night.
