Salvatore Ferragamo Celebrated 100 Years In Hollywood With The Newly Unveiled Rodeo Drive Flagship Store

Salvatore Ferragamo, the Italian luxury fashion House, celebrated the debut of an impressive design concept by renowned architect William Sofield with the reopening of the Beverly Hills Flagship store on Rodeo Drive. The unveiling of the new concept, inspired by Salvatore’s years of innovation in California, marked a return to Hollywood, 100 years in the making.

Salvatore Ferragamo , (5 June 1898 – 7 August 1960), the founder, was an Italian shoe designer. He worked with many Hollywood stars in the 1920s, before returning to Italy to found the eponymous company making unique handmade footwear. His scientific and creative approach to shoes spawned many innovations such as the wedge heel and cage heel. Film stars and celebrities continue to patronize his company, which has evolved into a luxury goods empire spanning the world.

Salvatore Ferragamo was born in 1898 in Bonito, near Avellino, the eleventh of 14 children. After making his first pair of shoes at age nine, for his sisters to wear at their confirmation, young Salvatore decided that he had found his calling.

After studying shoemaking in Naples for a year, Ferragamo opened a small store based in his parent’s home. In 1914, he emigrated to Boston, where one of his brothers worked in a cowboy boot factory. After a brief stint at the factory, Ferragamo convinced his brothers to move to California, first Santa Barbara then Hollywood. It was here that Ferragamo found success, initially opening a shop for repair and made-to-measure shoes, which soon became prized items among celebrities of the day, leading to a long period of designing footwear for the cinema. However, his thriving reputation as ‘Shoemaker to the Stars’ only partially satisfied him. He could not fathom why his shoes pleased the eye yet hurt the foot, so he proceeded to study anatomy at the University of Southern California.

After spending thirteen years in the United States, Ferragamo returned to Italy in 1927, this time settling in Florence. He began to fashion shoes for the wealthiest and most powerful women of the century, from the Maharani of Cooch Behar to Eva Peron to Marilyn Monroe. He opened a workshop in the Via Mannelli, concentrating his efforts in experimenting with design, applying for patents for ornamental and utility models and some related inventions.

Salvatore Ferragamo died in 1960 at the age of 62, but his name lives on as an international company, which has since expanded its operations to include luxury shoes, bags, eyewear, silk accessories, watches, perfumes and a ready-to-wear clothing line. The company is currently owned by the Ferragamo family, which in November 2006 included Salvatore’s widow Wanda, five children, 23 grandchildren and other relatives.

The company hosted an exclusive cocktail event with Fulvia Visconti Ferragamo, James Ferragamo, Creative Director Massimiliano Giornetti, CEO Michele Norsa and architect William Sofield joined by an array of LA celebrities and tastemakers including Demi MooreFreida PintoArmie Hammer and Elizabeth ChambersCamilla BelleKiernan ShipkaMackenzie FoyAngela LindvallAndy GarciaCody Horn, Holland Roden, Eric Buterbaugh, Shiva Rose, China Chow, Amanda Luttrell Garrigus, Joel Silver, Los Angeles Galaxy soccer player Robbie Rogers, stylist Petra Flannery, Jessica de Ruiter, Kelly Lynch, Kelly SawyerErica Pelosini, Kate Brien, Brigette Romanek, Crystal Lourd, Minnie Mortimer, Brooke Davenport, Marlien Rentmeester, and more. The collection, inspired by a modern romantic sensibility, was infused with movement, energy and Victorian detailing and perfectly complemented by the star accessory: exquisitely detailed sunglasses created in collaboration with Austrian eyewear company Silhouette. This special edition design will be available starting in January 2016 through select retailers and fashion stores worldwide, and will come with a limited edition lens cloth, also designed by Gordon. The Wes Gordon for Silhouette Special Edition is the second in a series of collaborations that will tap select fashion designers to reinterpret the iconic Titan Minimal Art frame to reflect their aesthetic, creating a new look annually._VH18227

The audience was treated to a sneak peek at Wes Gordon for Silhouette, which reflects Gordon’s signature aesthetic and brings a fashion-forward approach to the advanced, technically superb and rimless eyewear for which Silhouette is known. “My mission is to provide women with effortless sophistication,” says Gordon. “My collection for Silhouette is designed for confident women who communicate their style with subtle grace and without pretense, who are both feminine and mysterious.”

This special edition release features one stunning style based on the Silhouette Icon Titan Minimal Art, available in four captivating colors: Nude Brown, Classic Grey, Classic Green and – Gordon’s favorite hue – Ocean Blue. Each circular lens is meticulously crafted from a single piece of glass that is hand-sanded around the perimeter, then needle-painted with a contrast color – a new technique that Silhouette is debuting with this collection. The result is a beautiful pair of sunglasses combining retro glamour and expressive futurism. Designed to amplify a woman’s personal style and sense of confidence, these ultra-light frames do not mask the wearer but rather serve as a stylish adornment. IKEA Launches “Together, We Eat” Contest Celebrating How Food Connects People In and Around the Kitchen

IKEA U.S. has announced the launch of Together, We Eat, a quest to find the 50 best consumer stories behind cherished family recipes, celebrating the power of connection that food and the activities around it – from preparing to serving to eating – can bring. The contest recognizes the many tiny, magical moments that take place in the kitchen, bringing to life some of the best food traditions from people across the country. From now through October 27, IKEA is asking Americans to share the recipes, and more importantly, the tales behind their favorite dishes to demonstrate how the cooking and sharing of these meals have brought their loved ones together.

From Sunday dinners with Grandma’s famous meatballs to the first time Dad shared his secret BBQ recipe, participants can submit their recipes and stories on TogetherWeEat.com/contest under three categories: Wintertime Favorites (Cool Weather & Comfort Food Dishes), Serving Up Spring (Fresh Ingredients from Garden to Table), and Social Summer (Picnics, Cookouts, Reunions & More). Fifty total winners will be chosen and have their recipes and stories highlighted, including three grand-prize winners who will be announced in December 2015.

Submissions & Judging: Entrants may choose to submit up to one entry per theme. Deadlines for themes vary and are staggered throughout the duration of the contest:
– Wintertime Favorites (Theme #1) closes September 24, 2015
– Serving Up Spring (Theme #2) closes October 11, 2015
– Social Summer (Theme #3) closes October 27, 2015

For each submission, entrants are required to bring their story to life by submitting a personal story that showcases how a treasured dish brings their loved ones together, a recipe for the dish referenced in the story, a photo about the story and/or recipe, and an optional audio or video clip. Each entry will be judged based on relevance to the Together, We Eat theme, originality & creativity of the entry and overall storytelling ability.

Three grand prize winners (one per theme) will receive a prize package including a $1,500 IKEA gift card, a trip for two to New York City for a photo shoot to be included in a future issue of O, The Oprah Magazine, a “Dinner Party Kit” consisting of IKEA products, and a spotlight story on TogetherWeEat.com/contest. Additionally, a total of forty-seven first-prize winners across all categories will each receive a $250 IKEA gift card.

Throughout the program, Together, We Eat ambassador, culinary personality and television host, Katie Lee, will share personal stories and recipes to serve as inspiration for consumers. “For me, cooking wasn’t just a hobby growing up — it was a way of life. I grew up in a tight-knit family where each evening centered around the dinner menu,” said Lee. “I began cooking when I was only 4 years old with my grandmother. Food is the great connector, and several of my best memories are around the dinner table. I know this is true for many people, which is why I’m so thrilled to join IKEA for this effort.

Together, We Eat is a part of a yearlong IKEA effort focusing on everyday life in and around the kitchen – celebrating the many treasured moments that happen there and simple solutions as they relate to growing, cooking, serving and storing food.

At IKEA, we understand that there is so much more to food than food,” said Lisa Hajra, Together, We Eat Project Leader, IKEA. “Simply being together to talk, laugh and reconnect in the kitchen and around the table is just as important as the food itself. With Together, We Eat, we hope to curate the best examples of meaningful family food stories and through those, inspire people to make more food-related memories together.”

Please visit TogetherWeEat.com/contest for contest submission, additional guidelines, and inspirational stories and recipes.
