An American Icon Since 1965, The Iconic Lava Lamp® Turns 50!

Limited-Edition Anniversary Collection & The Beatles Themed Lava Lamps Now Available

In 2015, the ubiquitous 1960’s pop culture icon celebrates its 50th Anniversary. This year marks a half-century of Lava® Lamps in the United States, which has been featured in countless TV shows, movies, magazines and more. In honor of its golden anniversary, the ever-popular “original shape of cool” has created a limited edition 50th collection for its fans.

A lava lamp (or Astro lamp) is a decorative novelty item, invented by British accountant Edward Craven Walker, the founder of Mathmos, in 1963. The lamp contains blobs of colored wax inside a glass vessel filled with clear or translucent liquid; the wax rises and falls as its density changes due to heating from an incandescent light bulb underneath the vessel. The appearance of the wax is suggestive of pāhoehoe lava, hence the name. The lamps are designed in a variety of styles and colours.
