First Look: Collecting Contemporary At The Asian

The Asian Art Museum–Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture, San Francisco —well known for its vast collection of Asian art antiquities—will surprise visitors this fall with its second of two contemporary art exhibitions, this one featuring highlights of its contemporary art collection acquired over the past 15 years. Visitors can get a taste of the museum’s most exciting additions in First Look: Collecting Contemporary at the Asian, on view September 4–October 11, 2015.First_Look_major

Organized by guest curator Allison Harding, the exhibition presents more than 40 artworks, many on view for the first time, that connect us to Asia’s histories and traditions with the immediacy of contemporary ideas. First Look: Collecting Contemporary at the Asian was organized by the Asian Art Museum and its presentation is made possible with the generous support of The Akiko Yamazaki and Jerry Yang Fund for Excellence in Exhibitions and Presentations, China Guardian Auctions, and an anonymous donor.
Today, the
Asian Art Museum collection features more than 18,000 artworks, including more than 1,100 works created in the past 55 years; and consists of works of art and artifacts from all major Asian countries and traditions, some of which are as much as 6,000 years old. Major galleries are devoted to the arts of South Asia, West Asia and Central Asia, Southeast Asia, the Himalayas, China, Korea and Japan. There are 2,500 works on display in the permanent collection. First Look displays a range of mediums from photography, animation and video to contemporary Korean ceramics, Chinese ink paintings, sculptural Japanese baskets, drawings and more. An intentional relationship to Asian art and ideas ties these diverse pieces together.

Works debuting in First Look include two animated new media pieces by Japanese technologists teamLab.Untitled, No. 25 (2008) is an iconic photographic image by the husband and wife team, RongRong and Inri, depicting the couple with their hair braided together, literally joining them as one. In Ahmed Mater’s Illumination Waqf (2013), a diptych print in the form of an Islamic manuscript with decorated borders, shows X-rays of two human figures, as if in conversation.

To truly understand the contemporary, you must understand the tradition from which it emerged,” says Harding. “First Look embodies how tradition can inspire new works in the present and continue to impact contemporary life.”

Art dealing with landscape, whether everyday scenes or representations of spiritual connections to nature, runs throughout the museum’s entire collection. The contemporary works in
First Look examine this traditional subject in bold, unique ways, which are exemplified in Zhu Jinshi’s painting The Third Time Going to the Yellow Mountain (2011) and Okura Jiro’s wooden sculpture Chair for the Breeze (1973)

First Look also features several contemporary Chinese ink paintings, highlighting a blossoming area in the museum. The collection currently has more than 70 works by leading artists in the field, including an artwork by Lu Shoukun, the pioneer of the New Ink Movement in Hong Kong. The exhibition will display Lu’s painting Chan (1974) alongside other works such as C.C. Wang’s Brush Symphony (1998), which reinterpreted traditional forms. The exhibition will also showcase works by artists who have pushed the medium beyond paper to video, as seen in Xu Bing’s The Character of Characters (2012) and Yang Yongliang’s The Night of Perpetual Day (2013)

First Look will follow 28 Chinese (June 5–Aug. 16, 2015), a special exhibition at the museum featuring some of China’s most exciting artists from the country’s booming contemporary art scene. Reflecting a growing commitment to present contemporary art, the Asian Art Museum recently announced the appointment of Dr. Karin G. Oen as the museum’s assistant curator of contemporary art. Oen arrives at the museum as it kicks off its summer of contemporary exhibitions.

Following the enormous success of his #1, Grammy-Award winning album with Lady Gaga, Cheek To Cheek, this new release continues the classic series of Tony Bennett album releases celebrating the essentials of the Great American Songbook. The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern is an appreciation of the genius of Jerome David Kern (1885-1945), one of the 20th century’s most important American composers of musical theater and popular music.

Tony Bennett is the only artist to successfully bridge the worlds of pop music and jazz on an international scale for over 60 years and The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern become parts of a timeless legacy of recordings that Bennett has done throughout his career that have embraced both genres, in particular the revered piano jazz albums that he recorded with the late Bill Evans in 1975 and 1977. has become synonymous with the pop/jazz connection and in recent years has been a mentor to contemporary artists such as Lady Gaga and the late Amy Winehouse in encouraging them to embrace jazz music. With his 90th birthday less than a year away, The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern defines what makes Bennett unique in the pantheon of great singers and is a testament to the legacy that he continues to create as a recording artist and influence in the music industry.

The idea of a Kern Songbook project was Tony’s,” writes music historian Will Friedwald, “thereby placing Kern on the very short list of canonical composers (Rodgers & Hart, Harold Arlen, Duke Ellington, Irving Berlin, and Cy Coleman) who have been the beneficiaries of an entire album by Bennett. It was also Bennett’s idea to create the album in collaboration with the remarkable Bill Charlap….who can also take a great song we all know by heart and make us feel like we’ve never heard it before.

Friedwald writes about music and popular culture for The Wall Street Journal, worked with Tony Bennett on his “The Good Life” memoir, and is author of eight books including the award-winning “A Biographical Guide to the Great Jazz and Pop Singers,” “Sinatra! The Song Is You,” “Stardust Melodies,” and “Jazz Singing.”

Playing alongside Tony Bennett and Bill Charlap on The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern are pianist Renee Rosnes (on the piano duet pieces), Peter Washington (bass) and Kenny Washington (drums).

Over the course of his career, Kern composed more than 700 songs, creating musical elements used in more than 100 stage works, collaborating with the greatest lyricists and librettists of the era including P.G. Wodehouse, Oscar Hammerstein II, Dorothy Fields, Johnny Mercer, Ira Gershwin, E.Y. Harburg and many others on a seemingly limitless repertoire of classic songs including “Ol’ Man River,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes,” “The Way You Look Tonight,” “Long Ago and Far Away” and many more.
