U.S. Postal Service and Sweden Post to Jointly Issue Ingrid Bergman Stamp

Forever Stamp to be Dedicated Aug. 20 in Sweden

The U.S. Postal Service and Posten AB of Sweden has announced that award-winning actress Ingrid Bergman will be honored as the 19th stamp in the Legends of Hollywood series. The stamp will be issued jointly by the Postal Service and Sweden Post and go on sale
Aug. 20. Special ceremonies will be held later.

The stamp art features a circa 1940 image of Bergman taken by Laszlo Willinger, known for his pr15_039portraits of celebrities. Artist Kristen Monthei digitally colorized the image. Monthei also colorized the selvage photograph, a still of Bergman from Casablanca. Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp pane.

Bergman lit up the silver screen for decades, starring in a variety of European and American films. She won three Academy Awards, two Emmy Awards, and the Tony Award for best actress. She is best remembered for her timeless portrayals of Ilsa Lund in Casablanca (1942); Paula Alquist in Gaslight (1944); Anna Koreff in Anastasia (1956); and Alicia Huberman in Notorious (1946).

Bergman joins Marilyn Monroe, Humphrey Bogart, Alfred Hitchcock, John Wayne, Judy Garland, Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis, among many others, with a Legends of Hollywood stamp in her honor.

U.S. Postal Service to Issue Paul Newman Forever Stamp

The U.S. Postal Service announced today that the late award-winning actor and philanthropist Paul Newman will be honored on a Forever Stamp which will go on sale September 18.

The stamp art features photographer Steve Schapiro’s 1980 photograph of Newman accompanied by text that reads “Actor/Philanthropist.” Art director Derry Noyes designed the stamp.

With his blue eyes and on-screen charisma, Newman enthralled American moviegoers for six decades. Over the course of his decorated movie career, he received 10 Academy Award nominations, including eight for best actor. He won an Oscar for his role in the 1986 film “The Color of Money. At the Oscars in 1994, Newman was presented with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Newman stayed active in the arts and also embraced his many passions, particularly auto racing, which he took up in his 40s. Each year the number on his race car was changed to match his age. The last car he raced was number 82. He also served as the president of the board of the famed Actors Studio, which he helped support financially.

More than just a film icon, Newman used his success as an actor, writer, producer and director to advance his philanthropic endeavors funding charitable causes in an effort to make the world a better place.

Newman’s SeriousFun Children’s Network has helped more than 600,000 children and families in the United States and beyond. Perhaps Newman’s boldest action on the philanthropic stage came in 1982, when he founded the Newman’s Own food company. Beginning simply with a single product of oil-and-vinegar salad dressing and a commitment to quality and charitable giving over profit, the company has since grown into an international business with more than 200 products. Along the way, Newman’s Own has donated more than $430 million to thousands of charities.

In 1998, Newman helped create the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy, an organization composed of board chairs and CEOs of major corporations that focuses on corporate philanthropy and citizenship. In 2006, he co-founded the Safe Water Network, which provides market-based safe water solutions to people in the developing world.

China: Through the Looking Glass at The Metropolitan Museum of Art has been extended by three weeks through Labor Day, September 7. The exhibition, organized by The Costume Institute in collaboration with the Department of Asian Art, opened to the public on May 7, and has drawn more than 350,000 visitors in its first eight weeks.  To date, the exhibition’s attendance is pacing close to that of Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty (2011), which was the most visited Costume Institute exhibition ever, as well as the Met’s eighth most popular.

The exhibition, made possible by Yahoo, explores the impact of Chinese aesthetics on Western fashion and how China has fueled the fashionable imagination for centuries. High fashion is juxtaposed with Chinese costumes, paintings, porcelains, and other art, including films, to reveal enchanting reflections of Chinese imagery. The exhibition, which was originally set to close on August 16, is curated by Andrew Bolton. Wong Kar Wai is artistic director and Nathan Crowley served as production designer.

This is The Costume Institute’s first collaboration with another curatorial department since AngloMania: Tradition and Transgression in British Fashion in 2006, a partnership with the Department of European Sculpture and Decorative Arts. China: Through the Looking Glass features more than 140 examples of haute couture and avant-garde ready-to- wear alongside masterpieces of Chinese art. Filmic representations of China are incorporated throughout to reveal how our visions of China are shaped by narratives that draw upon popular culture, and to recognize the importance of cinema as a medium through which we understand the richness of Chinese history.

Encompassing approximately 30,000 square feet in 16 separate galleries in the Museum’s Chinese and Egyptian Galleries and Anna Wintour Costume Center, it is The Costume Institute’s largest special exhibition ever, and also one of the Museum’s largest. With gallery space three times the size of a typical Costume Institute major spring show, China has accommodated large numbers of visitors without lines.

The Anna Wintour Costume Center’s Lizzie and Jonathan Tisch Gallery presents a series of “mirrored reflections” focusing on Imperial China; the Republic of China, especially Shanghai in the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s; and the People’s Republic of China. These reflections, as well as others in the exhibition, are illustrated with scenes from films by such groundbreaking Chinese directors as Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige, Ang Lee, and Wong Kar Wai. Distinct vignettes are devoted to “women of style,” including Hu Die (known as Butterfly Wu), Oei Huilan (the former Madame Wellington Koo), and Soong Mei-Ling (Madame Chiang Kai-shek).

Directly above the Anna Wintour Costume Center, the Chinese Galleries on the second floor showcase fashion from the 1700s to the present, juxtaposed with decorative arts from Imperial China, including jade, bronze, lacquer, and blue-and-white porcelain, mostly drawn from the Met’s collection. The Astor Court features a thematic vignette dedicated to Chinese opera, focusing on John Galliano’s Spring 2003 Christian Dior Haute Couture Collection.

This exhibition is one of the most ambitious ever mounted by the Met, and I want as many people as possible to be able see it,” said Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of the Met. “It is a show that represents an extraordinary collaboration across the Museum, resulting in a fantastic exploration of China’s impact on creativity over centuries.”

Museum Members will have early morning private access to the galleries from Wednesday, July 22, to Sunday, July 26, from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., before the Museum opens to the public.

Decision 2016: Can This Crawfish Get More Supporters Than Bobby Jindal?

We have finally reached the thirteenth circle of hell (Dante is rolling over in his grave, wherever he is) with the recent announcement of Governor Bobby Jindal, Donald Trump and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie (just today) joining the rest of the gang (Cruz, Rubio, Bush, Huckabee, etc) and jumping into the race to become the Republican candidate for president. The deeply (and most) unpopular governor of Louisiana has stiff competition in his own backyard: A Louisiana Crawfish has announced its candidacy and proclaimed itself a “harbinger of doom” for Jindal. Therefore the real question is this: Can This Crawfish Get More Supporters Than Bobby Jindal?

When asked why people should vote for Crawfish instead of Jindal, Crawfish’s campaign spokesperson replied “Crawfish is NOT Bobby Jindal, which really, is reason enough.”

America Is Hard to See: Film & Video Screenings at The Whitney Museum of American Art

As part of the landmark exhibition America Is Hard to See, the Whitney Museum of American Art presents a screening series showcasing films and videos from the Museum’s collection by approximately fifty artists. Programs screen on select Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays in the Susan and John Hess Family Theater on the Museum’s third floor. Special Saturday evening events feature expanded cinema performances and rare screenings of works on film.

Mike Kelley based his 2005–6 Day is Done on a series of high school yearbook photographs of “extracurricular activities,” which Kelley transformed into a fractured, quasi-narrative musical that cycles through themes such as personal trauma, the structure of the institution, repressed memory, mass cultural ritual, and adolescence.

ACADEMY INVITES 322 TO MEMBERSHIP

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 322 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures.  Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy’s membership in 2015.

Each year, each Academy member may sponsor one candidate for membership within their branch.  New member application reviews take place in the spring.  Applications for the coming year must be received by March 24, 2016. New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.

M·A·C. Cosmetics (Make-up Art Cosmetics) welcomed celebrities, make-up artists and German guests to an exclusive first-of-a-kind night, to portray the glamour and boldness of the lip, with the ART OF THE LIP celebration in Munich, the latest stop in the MAC Cosmetics Art Of The Lip Campaign.

The HIV Story Project Launches Generations HIV Online Video Archive

The HIV Story Project has launched GenerationsHIV.org — a new online video archive that will eventually feature over 1,000+ testimonials about HIV/AIDS by people from all walks of life. Five years in the making, GENERATIONS HIV is a “Digital Media AIDS Quilt for the 21st Century,” and it is poised to become the most comprehensive video platform on the Internet about HIV/AIDS.

As we enter the 35th year of the global HIV/AIDS Pandemic, people are now living longer, and our stories are becoming more nuanced, complex, and challenging,” said Marc Smolowitz, executive producer and co-founder of The HIV Story Project. “Now more than ever, the need for powerful storytelling programs remains paramount to any HIV/AIDS community building strategy. Our hope is that the GenerationsHIV.org will emerge as a gathering place for all of us to recall, remember and look ahead to the future.”

The launch of the GENERATIONS HIV archive and GenerationsHIV.org was made with community leaders, project partners and HIV/AIDS activists on the steps of San Francisco City Hall symbolically on June 5th, the day thirty four years ago in 1981, when the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) reported the first case of AIDS in the United States and National HIV/AIDS Long-Term Survivors Awareness Day.

Founded in 2009 by filmmakers Jorg Fockele and Marc Smolowitz, The HIV Story Project is a San Francisco-based non-profit organization focused on bridging HIV/AIDS with film, media and storytelling to fight global stigma associated with the disease. The organization has produced two highly regarded documentaries — the award-winning STILL AROUND (2011) and KEEP THE PROMISE: THE GLOBAL FIGHT AGAINST AIDS (2013) — both films have screened widely around the world. Its latest film — DESERT MIGRATION — will have its world premiere at Frameline39: San Francisco International LGBTQ Film Festival (June 18-28, 2015) on June 25th, 2015The HIV Story Project also offers media production services, consultation, and training to HIV/AIDS nonprofits in San Francisco and beyond.

The HIV Story Project developed the concept in 2010 by creating an interactive Generations HIV Video Storytelling Booth at Under One Roof in San Francisco to record video testimonials about people’s experiences with HIV/AIDS.  It functioned like a photo booth but instead of taking pictures, it recorded video testimonials about people’s experiences with HIV/AIDS.  The project grew from there, staging ten storytelling film events inSan Francisco and Oakland and in Washington DC at the International AIDS Conference.

Through the online interactive platform, GenerationsHIV.org seeks to voice the stories of communities that are underrepresented and focuses on how people from different generations have been impacted and affected by HIV/AIDS, encouraging communication between them.  For that purpose, participants of the storytelling booth are asked to identify with one of four age brackets: the generation that grew up before AIDS in the Seventies; when AIDS first appeared in the Eighties; during the epidemic’s peak in the US in the Nineties; and since the disease has become more manageable, but not cured, in the 21st Century.  From there, participants are offered three video choices: To record a question geared towards a specific generation based on the 4 decade demographics; Listen to questions posed by other booth users, and record their answer in response; or Record their story for preservation in the Archive.

More than 500+ video stories are currently archived on the GenerationsHIV.org website where  users can explore, share and reflect.  Over the next several months, leading up to World AIDS Day on December 1st, the archive will grow to more than 1000+ stories and testimonials.

Throughout this project, what we found is that people are actually quite hungry to speak and be heard when it comes to HIV/AIDS,” added Smolowitz.  “In many instances, people entered our booth pretty confident that they did not have a story to share about HIV/AIDS only to exit the experience transformed, inspired, even grateful.”

The GENERATIONS HIV archive is co-presented by the Office of San Francisco Supervisor Scott Wiener, National AIDS Memorial Grove, and Let’s Kick ASS (AIDS Survivor Syndrome) and involves many supporters, including partnering with 30+ HIV/AIDS funders and nonprofits to bring the storytelling booth into places and spaces that serve diverse and underserved communities.

“Four decades into the global AIDS pandemic, HIV/AIDS still affects millions of people every day, particularly the LGBT community here in San Francisco,” said Wiener, San Francisco District 8 Supervisor, who attended the launch event. “The Generations HIV Archive provides a unique interactive platform for experiencing the history, impact of the HIV/AIDS Pandemic and the countless stories that need to continue being told.”

HIV & AIDS in the United States Update: National HIV Testing Day June 27

Each year on June 27, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) observe National HIV Testing Day. On this day, the agency unite with partners, health departments, and other organizations to raise awareness about the importance of HIV testing and early diagnosis of HIV. You, too, can help to encourage HIV testing on National HIV Testing Day and every day by ensuring people get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to the proper care and treatment services.

This year, Act Against AIDS Instagram will launch the week of June 22 in support of National HIV Testing Day. Act Against AIDS (AAA) is an initiative launched by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and The White House to combat complacency about HIV and AIDS in the United States. Launched in 2009, Act Against AIDS focuses on raising awareness among all Americans and reducing the risk of infection among the hardest-hit populations – gay and bisexual men, African Americans, Latinos, and other communities at increased risk.

Act Against AIDS consists of several concurrent HIV prevention campaigns and uses mass media (TV, radio, newspapers, magazines, and the Internet) to deliver important HIV prevention messages. All campaigns support the comprehensive HIV prevention efforts of CDC and the nhtd_profile_logoNational HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS). Act Against AIDS also supports the Act Against AIDS Leadership Initiative (AAALI), a network of national-level organizations that focus on African Americans, black men who have sex with men (MSM), and the Latino community.

National HIV Testing Day is a reminder to get the facts, get tested, and get involved to take care of yourself and your partners. An estimated 1.2 million people in the United States are living with HIV, and that number grows by almost 50,000 every year. One in seven people who have HIV don’t know it. That means they aren’t getting the medical care they need to stay healthy and avoid passing HIV to others.

The CDC has found that more than 90 percent of new HIV infections in the United States could be prevented by testing and diagnosing people who have HIV and ensuring they receive prompt, ongoing care and treatment. Early linkage to and retention in HIV care is central to managing HIV and promoting health among all people living with HIV. HIV medicines can keep people with HIV healthy for many years, and greatly reduce the chance of transmitting HIV to their sex partners.

But before we can stop any epidemic, we first have to recognize the magnitude of the disease. HIV is still a threat across the United States. And even though there are treatments to help people with HIV live longer than ever before, AIDS is still a significant health issue. HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus, which can lead to Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome, or AIDS. Unlike some other viruses, the human body cannot get rid of HIV. That means that once you have HIV, you have it for life.

No safe and effective cure currently exists, but scientists are working hard to find one, and remain hopeful. Meanwhile, with proper medical care, HIV can be controlled. Treatment for HIV is often called antiretroviral therapy or ART, which can dramatically prolong the lives of many people infected with HIV and lower their chance of infecting others. Before the introduction of ART in the mid-1990s, people with HIV could progress to AIDS in just a few years. Today, someone diagnosed with HIV and treated before the disease is far advanced can have a nearly normal life expectancy.

HIV affects specific cells of the immune system, called CD4 cells, or T cells. Over time, HIV can destroy so many of these cells that the body can’t fight off infections and disease. When this happens, HIV infection leads to AIDS. Learn more about the stages of HIV and how to tell whether you’re infected.

Getting an HIV test is the only way to know if you have HIV. Getting tested can give you some important information and can help keep you—and others—safe. For example,

The CDC recommends that everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 get tested for HIV at least once as part of routine health care, and that people with certain risk factors get tested more often. People with more than one sex partner, people with sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and people who inject drugs are likely to be at high risk and should get tested at least once a year. Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from even more frequent testing, depending on their risk. To protect your own health, you should also get tested if you have been sexually assaulted.

If you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant, the CDC recommends HIV testing with each pregnancy, both for your own benefit and to reduce the risk of transmitting HIV to your baby.

The immune system usually takes 3 to 8 weeks to make antibodies against HIV, but tests differ in how early they are able to detect antibodies. Although most HIV tests look for these antibodies, some look for the virus itself. The period after infection but before the test becomes positive is called the window period.

Deciding when to get tested therefore depends on when you may have been exposed and which test is used. You can ask your health care provider about the window period for the HIV test you are taking. If you are using a home test, you can get that information from the materials included in the packaging of the test.

A few people will have a longer window period, so if you get a negative antibody test result in the first 3 months after possible exposure, you should get a repeat test after 3 months. Ninety-seven percent of people will develop antibodies in the first 3 months after they are infected. In very rare cases, it can take up to 6 months to develop antibodies to HIV.

Knowing your HIV status gives you the power to control your health and your future. And getting tested has never been easier. You can ask your health care provider to test you for HIV. Many medical clinics, substance abuse programs, community health centers, and hospitals offer HIV testing. Testing is often free of charge. You can also:

  • Visit GetTested and enter your ZIP code.
  • Text your ZIP code to KNOWIT (566948), and you will receive a text back with a testing site near you.
  • Call 800-CDC-INFO (800-232-4636) to ask for free testing sites in your area.
  • Contact your local health department.
  • Get a home testing kit (the Home Access HIV-1 Test System or the OraQuick In-Home HIV Test) from a drugstore.

Ultimately, HIV testing is only one step. We can all do something to help stop HIV. Here are some ideas about how you and your friends can get involved.

  • Share your knowledge of HIV or your personal HIV story with others. One of the best ways to increase awareness is through a personal connection with others. Participants featured in CDC’s HIV awareness campaign Let’s Stop HIV Together, shared their voices and personal stories to raise HIV awareness, reduce stigma, and champion the power of relationships in the personal and public fight to stop HIV.
  • Use social media to increase HIV awareness. Follow @TalkHIV and tweet about National HIV Testing Day using ‪ #‎NHTD. You can also like Act Against AIDS on Facebook and create your own Let’s Stop HIV Together meme. Share your ad and encourage others to do the same.
  • Support people living with HIV. Have an open, honest conversation about staying safe and healthy. Listen to the challenges that people living with HIV face and provide support for their special needs.
  • Volunteer in your community. The first step to getting involved in HIV prevention is to contact your local AIDS service organizations and/or community health departments. These groups can help identify opportunities or other organizations that may need the support of volunteers .

In addition, CDC’s Act Against AIDS (en Español ) campaign materials promote HIV awareness and testing in high-risk populations.

The cast and crew of Sundance Film Festival sensation TANGERINE are about to let their transgender flags fly high and proud. TANGERINE director Sean Baker, cast members James Ransone (TV’s “The Wire”), Mya Taylor, Kitana Kiki Rodriguez, and special surprise guests are confirmed to celebrate TANGERINE at the 45th Annual NYC Pride March on Sunday, April 28th. At NYC Pride, the cast and crew of TANGERINE will celebrate trans pride, a movement that is getting its overdue public acknowledgment. Spinning on the float will be trans DJ Mursi Layne.

TANGERINE premiered at Sundance to critical acclaim and the stars of the film, Taylor and Rodriguez, are trans actresses playing trans characters.  The New York Times’ Manohla Dargis wrote about TANGERINE, “the most astonishing thing about this perfectly cast, beautifully directed movie is the tenderness with which he foregrounds marginalized characters.”

Ingeniously shot on the iPhone 5s, Rolling Stone has called TANGERINE  “a visually innovative knockout that grabs you from the first frame.” Buzzfeed calls the film “riotous, daring and crackling with vitality.

The TANGERINE float will be in the first half of the March, which starts at noon on Sunday, June 28th; that evening, TANGERINE will make its New York debut as the closing night film of BAMcinemaFEST. It opens in theaters July 10th.

Jere Keys of NYC Pride says of TANGERINE’s participation, “We’re thrilled to have TANGERINE join with over 350 groups who will be marching in this historic year, especially as the film further highlights the amazing diversity of people and issues represented by NYC Pride.”

The first March was held in 1970 and has since become an annual civil rights demonstration. Over the years its purpose has broadened to include recognition of the fight against AIDS and to remember those we have lost to illness, violence and neglect.

 

THE WHITNEY MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ART PRESENTS ANYWHERE IN TIME: A CONLON NANCARROW FESTIVAL JUNE 17–JUNE 28, 2015

Since his death in 1997, the music of Conlon Nancarrow, which borrowed both from boogie-woogie and the atonal avant-garde, has grown in influence and infamy. This landmark festival will include a retrospective of Nancarrow’s complete Studies for Player Piano and performances by Alarm Will Sound, Steve Coleman, and others, as well as a dance performance presented by the Merce Cunningham Trust.

The eleven-day Anywhere in Time Festival is a comprehensive reflection of Nancarrow’s music, bringing together leading artists whose practice is directly or indirectly informed by his work. It marks the first complete retrospective of Nancarrow’s Studies for Player Piano in the United States, performed on a renovated 1921 instrument identical to the composer’s own. One of the most innovative interpreters of Nancarrow, Alarm Will Sound, is in residence for two days, playing existing and new arrangements plus a fascinating selection of related works by other composers. Percussion virtuoso Chris Froh leads a day of percussion, playing seemingly impossible solo Nancarrow arrangements and discussing and dissecting the works. Dancers from the Merce Cunningham Trust Fellowship Program present reconstructed performances of Cunningham’s seminal dance Crises (1960), which famously brought Nancarrow’s music to its first international audiences. Jazz composer and saxophonist Steve Coleman, with his ensemble Five Elements, brings his own M-Base rhythmic principals to the proceedings. Guitar improviser Henry Kaiser and composer/percussionist Lukas Ligeti share a bill exploring the deep influence of Nancarrow on their own innovative practices. Virtuoso of the Player Piano, the definitive film made about Nancarrow, will screen twice during the festival.

Anywhere in Time offers opportunities to hear the player piano firsthand and up close, as visitors to Nancarrow’s studio would have experienced it. In sessions entitled Nancarrow Deconstructed, the architectural nature of the compositions is exposed and explained by a combination of the featured artists, festival co-curator Dominic Murcott, and special guests including Charles Amirkhanian, the producer of the most important Nancarrow recordings; Kyle Gann, journalist, composer, and author of The Music of Conlon Nancarrow; and James Greeson, director of Virtuoso of the Player Piano. The Whitney will also welcome Yoko and Mako Nancarrow, the artist’s wife and son, who will take part in discussions and share their experiences of the composer’s life.

In the eighteen years since his death, the music of composer Conlon Nancarrow has steadily grown in influence and infamy. Viewed as a fascinating anomaly during much of his lifetime, Nancarrow created staggeringly complex pieces with rhythmical structures—borrowed from boogie-woogie and the atonal avant-garde, and, eventually, formed in his own unique language—that he achieved through highly unusual means.

After fighting in the Spanish Civil War against Franco’s fascist regime, Nancarrow returned to the United States but was refused a passport renewal on the basis of his political beliefs. He responded by relocating in 1940 to Mexico City, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Working in near isolation, Nancarrow ceased writing music for live performers and instead turned to the only means of realizing his musical vision in the precomputer era: composing for the player piano.

The eventual patronage of John Cage, Merce Cunningham, Györgi Ligeti, and others ensured that Nancarrow’s oeuvre was ultimately recorded and distributed. By the 1980s, a new generation of highly skilled players took an interest in his work, and his ensemble pieces crept into the canon. Heroically difficult instrumental arrangements of his player piano music have become increasingly popular. But while the recordings of his works are relatively familiar, player pianos themselves have all but disappeared.

A biographical overview of Nancarrow’s life and times, from his beginnings in Texarkana, Texas, and his years in Boston through his fighting in the Spanish Civil War and his emigration to Mexico. The film features interviews with his family members and those who were closest to Nancarrow during his career, including Yoko Nancarrow, Charles Amirkhanian, Kyle Gann, and Trimpin, among others. It also presents performance footage of his first published piano pieces, as well as a newly discovered set of two-part inventions he composed in his first years in Mexico performed at the Sacher Foundation in Basel, Switzerland by pianist Helena Bugallo. Other highlights include “live” performances of his powerful Studies #25, 3a, 37, and 21, his famous “Canon X.” Filmmaker Jim Greeson will be present for the screening.

Jazz composer Steve Coleman has cited Conlon Nancarrow as an important influence and one of his favorite composers. In his own singular music, Coleman has explored the complexities of rhythm and time in utterly unique ways. In most music, there is an agreed-upon groove. Other music uses syncopation to suggest other rhythms. Finally, there comes a point where the glue dissolves and the separate rhythmic entities have more and more tenuous relationships. Coleman’s dense, mysterious musical structures tip over into something else, as his rhythmic work is often both polyrhythmic (one rhythm with a number of grooves), and he is one of the very few players working with polytempo (completely different tempi).

The ground-breaking program, BodyScience, launched after nearly 2 years of hard work, research and development, will allow the experts at The BodyHoliday to customize highly individual programs for their guests, thus allowing them to truly maximize their visit.

Ahead of their arrival guests will be asked to provide a series of home-based tests, DNA samples and answer an extensive questionnaire that will be sent off and analyzed by BodyScience experts. On arrival, guests will receive a consultation with the Ayurvedic doctor who will perform on-site tests that provide further information about the guest’s state of health and wellness to complement the initial results.  These tests include assessing heart rate, blood pressure, the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, cardio and arterial fitness, body fat analysis, lung capacity, 3D heart mapping and Iridology, among others.

Asian Art Museum Continues Summer Celebration of Contemporary Chines Art

The Asian Art Museum continues its summer of contemporary art with an array of public programs mostly exploring the topics addressed in 28 Chinese, on view until August 16.

– On Thursday, July 2, artist and co-founder of The Civic Beat An Xiao Mina will lead a panel focusing on creative forms and expression and host a calligraphy workshop in Memes, Puns and Selfies: A Look at Chinese Digital Culture, which is an interactive program designed to explore the visual culture of the Chinese Internet.

– 7/11 Teacher Workshop: China and the Forbidden City – Learn about the past and present of China’s Forbidden City, then view 28 Chinese and see how the contemporary artists in the show resonate with their cultural identities.

– On Saturday, July 18, the museum co–presents with Asia Society of North California Panel Discussion: Urbanization and Globalization in Chinaa panel discussion with leading scholars on the compatibility of Chinese traditions and global trends, as well two of the major forces agitating change in present day China: urbanization and globalization.

– On Thursday, July 23, the museum’s Artist Drawing Club member Ahree Lee presents Your Piece, which reimagines Korean wrapping cloths bojagi, through a video installation that invites the public to participate in creating a collective wrapping cloth of memories.

In addition, the Asian Art Museum will screen Fang Lu’s No World June 18th. No World raises questions about the process of image making, blurring the line between performance and reality. The film follows six young protagonists residing in an empty house performing their daily activities to rehearse the act of protest and perform violent behavior without actual conflict. The image of struggle seamlessly transforms into an image of youth: free, rebellious and beautiful. However, the question remains – what is an image? How is it produced, mediated and consumed? A conversation with the artist and Herb Tam, director of exhibitions at the Museum of Chinese in America Herb Tam, follows.

Artist Fang Lu is featured in the Asian Art Museum’s current special exhibition 28 Chinese.

Trevor Bell: Thrust Comes To New York City

The title of the exhibition, Thrust, is taken from one of the most visually striking paintings featured in the show. The word ‘thrust’ seems to describe perfectly Bell’s practice – it implies progression and a barely contained drive towards a goal. The word also conveys a sense of power, scale and virility. All these attributes are evident, in one way or another, in the paintings Bell has produced throughout his long career.

Currently in his 80s, Bell is a genuine, integral part of the British vanguard of modernism and continues to paint vibrant and inspiring works.

Bell made his reputation in the 1950s and 1960s as a leading member of the younger generation of St. Ives artists who established 20th century British art on the world stage, and has been awarded the Paris Biennale International Painting Prize and an Italian Government Scholarship amongst many prestigious awards. Bell was invited to become Professor for Master (Graduate) Painting at the Florida State University in Tallahassee in 1976. There he developed the large-scale, intensely colored paintings for which he is best known.

This is the first time the general public have been invited to share the front row of a catwalk show during London Collections Men with fashion leaders, press and celebrities attending from around the world.
There will be four shows on Jermyn St with 1,200 expected to visit the specially constructed catwalk, with the road closed to traffic. Brands participating will include heritage names such as Aquascutum, Dunhill, Budd Shirts, Turnbull & Asser and John Lobb as well as contemporary, newly arrived names including Tiger of Sweden, Barbour International and Osprey. Bringing together this fantastic array of brands, the event will also allow visitors to purchase the garments they see on the catwalk in the stores of St James’s.

Beware of the Voices inside your Head: Disney Pixar’s Inside Out

Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it’s no exception for Riley Anderson, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness—who try to guide her through her everyday life. The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Inside Out is produced by Pixar Animation Studios and released by Walt Disney Pictures. The film is based on an original idea by Pete Docter, who is directing the film along with co-director Ronnie del Carmen, and producer Jonas Rivera. The film’s voice cast features Amy Poehler, Phyllis Smith, Bill Hader, Lewis Black and Mindy Kaling.

Additional voice cast includes Kaitlyn Dias as Riley Anderson, Diane Lane as Riley’s Mom, Kyle MacLachlan as Riley’s Dad, Richard Kind as Bing Bong, Paula Poundstone as Forgetter PaulaBobby Moynihan as Forgetter BobbyPaula Pell as a Dream Director and Mother’s Anger, and Lori Alan as Mother’s Sadness. Muppet performers Frank Oz and Dave Goelz, lent their voices to Subconscious Guard Dave and Subconscious Guard Frank, respectively. Red Hot Chili Peppers band member Flea voiced Mind Worker Cop Jake. Several of the film’s creators also contributed their voices, including Docter as Father’s Anger, writer Josh Cooley as Jangles the Clown, and co-director Ronnie del Carmen who provided additional voices. Regular Pixar voice actor John Ratzenberger lent his voice to Fritz. Actress Rashida Jones, one of the writers on the upcoming Toy Story 4, voiced the emotions of “Cool Girl“.

The music for the film is Michael Giacchino‘s fifth collaboration with Pixar as a composer. Walt Disney Records will release the soundtrack on June 16, 2015.

The film had its world premiere on May 18, 2015, at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in an out-of-competition screening, and is scheduled to be followed by a wide theatrical release on this coming Friday. The film has so far received unanimous acclaim, with many critics praising its unique, imaginative concept.

Jeff Sheng’s FEARLESS: PORTRAITS OF LGBT STUDENT ATHLETES Celebrates The Best Among Us During Gay Pride Month

After 13 years of photography by American artist and photographer Jeff Sheng, a very successful Kickstarter campaign, and 3 years of writing, design and production, Fearless: Portraits of  LGBT Student Athletes will finally become a book and be released in late June 2015.  Somebody Books announces the release of FEARLESS, a photography book and personal memoir by Jeff Sheng. Recalling his experience as a closeted high school student athlete in the 1990s, Sheng uses his own story as a foundation for a wider exploration of the current LGBT rights movement.

Working this on book, says Sheng, “I have mostly learned about the power of the individual. And hard work and perseverance. I never thought that this book would come out as beautifully as it did. It hasn’t fully hit me yet – having worked on something for 13 years, to finally see it in print. I’m sure the emotion will get to me soon at some point.

Woven throughout the 316-page book are photographic portraits of 202 lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender high school and college athletes from the United States and Canada taken by the author over a 13-year span between 2003 and 2015. The book also includes intimate writings from some of the featured athletes and concludes with an afterword essay by retired professional NBA basketball player Jason Collins, the first player in the NBA to come out as openly gay while still competing.

The titles for the images use first name, sport(s), school, and the year in which the photograph was taken. For high school athletes, the state of their high school is noted and also a varsity distinction if that was told to Sheng at the time of the shoot. Most college athletes are varsity NCAA team athletes, though a few are on club/recreation teams. This distinction is not made in the title for college athletes. In certain cases, select photo shoots were done in the year or two following the athlete’s graduation, but most were done while the athlete was still in school and competing.

Fearless is truly a revelation. In the first three chapters, Sheng talked about his childhood, his teenage years (“Growing Up Jeffrey, 1980 -1998“), early years in college (“Into A New Life, 1999-2002“) and the post-grad years of searching for a purpose (“Step Inside The Court, 2003-2005“) in an open, honest way that is quite reminiscent of an earlier autobiography, 1973’s The Best Little Boy In The World (written by Andrew Tobias as “John Reid“),  a classic account of growing up gay in America, which is also voiced in equal parts honesty and logic and humor. The same can be said of Sheng’s story Fearless. It is told not in a straight line narrative but a story that circles back, time and time again, to the ideal that one should be true to one’s self if one is to be truly happy, a sentiment we should all embrace and hold near. The early years, it should be said, informed his future and propelled him to begin, shepherded through the good (and bad) times and bring to fruition the Fearless Project.

Chapter four (“To Change The Way People See, 2006-2008“) delved into the process of photographing the student athletes, and the way in which his interactions with them served to change him for the better. I have never been more affected by a photograph than I was as I view each image of the 202 student athletes dispersed throughout Fearless. There is indeed something very fearless about these young people. The way they look dare you to judge them (at your own peril) give me hope for the next generation of LGBTQ leaders. We are in good hands with these guys.

The last chapter (“This Is Our Collective Story, 2012-2015“) and the individual essays that followed it is, absolutely, the underlying reason to buy and read this book. These essays allowed some of the featured student athletes to tell their stories, all the better to understand and celebrate their accomplishments as students, athletes, successful human beings and budding leaders of America and the free world.

The emotion heart and soul of Fearless belongs to Alyssa Sialaris, a four-time all-American collegiate athlete Sheng had photographed just a few months earlier in 2013, who had suddenly and unexpectedly passed away (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jeff-sheng/photographer-responds-to-parents-of-lgbt-athlete-who-passed-away_b_7542036.html). Her loss is deeply felt, from her photo on one of the covers to the heartfelt essay written by her close friend, Jordan Vega.

Sheng praised the young people profiled: “I don’t want this book to be about me. It’s about the athletes, the 202 brave young individuals who had the courage to come out while still in high school or college, something that I could never do as a student athlete.  While the book is my personal memoir, it is also a celebration of everyone’s collective accomplishments as an LGBT community, each one of us doing out part to advance our rights to just be who we are. It’s our collective memoir for the movement.”

To capture the diversity of the LGBT community, the book has 8 different speciality covers, each one with a different athlete from Fearless, representing the wide spectrum of sport, experience, race/ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation/gender identity of the LGBT sports community. When stacked together, the 8 different book versions form a three-dimensional representation of the original 1978 LGBT pride flag. While each of the 8 covers is different, the inside of every Fearless book is the same.

FEARLESS: Portraits of LGBT Student Athletes (Hardcover, 8.5” x 11” vertical, 316pp, published by Somebody Books, is now available for sale ($39.50) at [fearlessbookstore.com]) and will start shipping to the public the last week of June, the timing coinciding with the 45th anniversary of the first LGBT pride marches held in New York and San Francisco in 1970. It was printed using five-color process inks, by offset lithography, and Smyth sewn in 21 signatures. The book was designed by New York-based design firm Isometric Studio and printed by Colonial Printing, a division of Integrity Graphics Inc., in Warwick, Rhode Island.

Jeff Sheng is an artist, photographer, writer and sociologist based in Los Angeles. For over the last decade, his work has explored issues of LGBT rights and acceptance in the 21st Century, and his photography on this topic has been published by Time Magazine, Newsweek, the New York Times Magazine, the Advocate, and The New Yorker, among others.

Since 2006, his photo series Fearless, which this book is based on, has been exhibited at over 70 different venues, including the headquarters of Nike, Goldman Sachs and ESPN, as well as select locations at the 2010 Winter Olympics and the 2012 Summer Olympics. His other well known series, Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell (2009-2011), about closeted United States military service members, was profiled in 2010 by The New York Times, ABC World News Tonight, and CNN.

Sheng completed his undergraduate degree at Harvard College in Visual and Environmental Studies (VES), and has a Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) in Studio Art from the University of California, Irvine.  He is also a PhD Candidate in sociology at Stanford University.

Ultimately, FEARLESS will reach a wide-ranging audience across the spectrum but Sheng has a primary target audience in mind:  “The book was designed with the target audience of ‘PFLAG parents’ in mind. First Lady Michelle Obama is MORE Magazine’s First-Ever Guest Editor

MORE, the magazine for women of style and substance, today announced that First Lady Michelle Obama will be the first-ever guest editor of the magazine for its upcoming July/August 2015 issue, on newsstands June 23. This historic issue also marks the first time that a First Lady of the United States has guest edited an entire issue of a magazine. In recognition of Mrs. Obama’s accomplishments and to empower readers to create positive change in one or more of the areas that she highlights, the issue is dedicated to the theme More Impact.

This summer, a new film created by Finlandia Vodka will bring 1000 years of wisdom to viewers, aimed to inspire and to bring the brand’s less ordinary philosophy into their own lives. From a drag-wrestler in New Mexico’s take on confidence, to a former double agent’s view on identity, the film’s nuggets of wisdom aren’t the usual, saccharine and predictable set of platitudes. 1000 Years of Less Ordinary Wisdom delivers life advice that could only come from those who together have truly lived ten centuries of ‘less ordinary.’

The film features a total of 14 characters, including New York city’s nonagenarian grande dame of fashion, Iris Apfel, kinetic sculptor Theo Jansen and Icelandic Game of Thrones actor and world’s third strongest man, Hafthor Julius Bjornsson. ASIAN ART MUSUEM PRESENTS “LOOKING EAST: HOW JAPAN INSPIRED MONET, VAN GOGH, AND OTHER WESTERN ARTISTS”

Asian Art Museum presents European, American, and Japanese masterpieces in exhibition exploring the impact of Japan on Western artists.

Japan’s opening to international trade in the 1850s after centuries of self-imposed isolation set off a craze for all things Japanese among European and North American collectors, artists and designers. The phenomenon, dubbed japonisme by French writers, radically altered the course of Western art in the modern era. San Francisco’s Asian Art Museum ( 200 Larkin Street, San Francisco, CA 94102, 415.581.3500) delves into this sweeping development in the traveling exhibition Looking East: How Japan Inspired Monet, Van Gogh, and Other Western Artists, an exhibition that traces the West’s growing fascination with Japan, the collecting of Japanese objects, and the exploration of Japanese subject matter and styles.

Looking East will be on view from October. 30, 2015February. 7, 2016 with the exhibition’s final weeks marking the start of the museum’s 50th anniversary year in 2016. The museum will offer special events and activities throughout 2016 to commemorate this important milestone.

The Asian Art Museum—Chong-Moon Lee Center for Asian Art and Culture is one of San Francisco’s premier arts institutions and home to a world-renowned collection of more than 18,000 Asian art treasures spanning 6,000 years of history.

Organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the exhibition first premiered at Nashville’s Frist Center for the Visual Arts, followed by a tour in Japan and then a stop at the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec. The Asian Art Museum’s presentation, curated by Dr. Laura Allen, curator of Japanese art, and Dr. Yuki Morishima, assistant curator of Japanese art, is the final stop on the exhibition’s international tour. The museum will have extended hours until 9 PM on Thursdays for Looking East beginning Jan. 7.

features more than 170 artworks drawn from the acclaimed collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, with masterpieces by the great impressionist and post-impressionist painters Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, and Paul Gauguin, among others. The art and culture of Japan inspired leading artists throughout Europe and the United States to create works of renewed vision and singular beauty. Within each theme, artworks from Japan are paired with American or European works to represent the West’s assimilation of new thematic and formal approaches. Japanese woodblock prints by such celebrated masters as Kitagawa Utamaro, Utagawa Hiroshige and Katsushika Hokusai are shown in dialogue with oil paintings, prints and photographs by a diverse mix of Western artists, demonstrating regional variations on japonisme. Bronze sword guards and paper stencils from Japan are juxtaposed with metalwork by Western manufacturers Boucheron, Gorham and Tiffany. Other objects used in daily life, like a chair designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, also show the wide-ranging impact of Japanese design in the West.

Additional highlights in the exhibition include Vincent van Gogh’s painting Postman Joseph Roulin; Claude Monet’s The water lily pond; Five Swans, an elegant wool tapestry designed by Otto Eckmann; Paul Gauguin’s canvas Landscape with Two Breton Women; and Kubo Shunman’s hanging scroll Courtesan in the Snow at the New Year.

Looking East: How Japan Inspired Monet, Van Gogh, and Other Western Artists was organized by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The Atelier with Alina Cho Continues with a Conversation Featuring Alber Elbaz at The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Atelier with Alina Cho will conclude its inaugural season with Alber Elbaz, Artistic Director of Lanvin, in conversation with style journalist Alina Cho on Tuesday, June 9 at 6:00 p.m.  On The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s stage, Cho’s series has presented candid conversations about the fashion industry as it relates to art and visionary thinkers, launched with Anna Wintour on November 17, 2014, followed by Donatella Versace on April 30, 2015. Tickets start at $40.

The series has been part of the 2014-15 season of Met Museum Presents, which offers innovative talks and performances at the Metropolitan Museum, and will continue next season. Programs in the 2015-16 season will be announced at a later date.

Cho is perhaps best known for her fashion coverage on CNN.  Since 2001, Alber Elbaz has served as the artistic director of Lanvin Paris. Under his tenure, the brand has experienced tremendous growth, due in large part to his “industrial couture” approach to fashion.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART TO PRESENT MAJOR RETROSPECTIVE OF DONALD JUDD IN 2017

In the fall of 2017, The Museum of Modern Art will present the most comprehensive exhibition of the work of Donald Judd (American, 1928–1994) to date. Comprising more than 100 works of art gathered from public and private collections around the world, this retrospective aims to provide a multifaceted perspective on Judd. Organized by Ann Temkin, The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture, in collaboration with Judd Foundation, the exhibition will be installed in the Museum’s second-floor Contemporary Galleries. Building on intensive curatorial research, the exhibition will advance scholarship on Judd’s art and introduce his work to new generations of viewers. MoMA will be the sole venue for the exhibition.

The exhibition and its catalogue will address the great breadth of Judd’s artistic vision, which encompassed not only sculptural forms but also painting, printmaking, writing, art criticism, architecture, furniture design, and land preservation, as represented in Judd’s permanently installed homes and studios in Marfa, Texas, and at 101 Spring Street, New York.

The Judd Foundation is a non-profit created by Donald Judd to preserve his private living and working spaces in downtown New York and Marfa, Texas. The Foundation promotes a wider understanding of Judd’s artistic legacy by providing access to these spaces and by developing scholarly and educational programs that offer direct engagement with Judd’s work and ideas.

The Foundation maintains sixteen properties in New York and Texas. Collectively, these properties comprise more than 126,000 square feet of permanently-installed spaces, including sculptures, paintings, prints, drawings and furniture by Judd and his contemporaries, as well as the artist’s writings and archive. Judd Foundation’s current initiatives include the Donald Judd Archive, conservation, publications, exhibitions and The Donald Judd Catalogue Raisonné. The Catalogue Raisonné will further scholarship on Judd’s work by offering a comprehensive overview of his oeuvre as well as a complete chronology, bibliography and exhibition history.

One of the most important aspects for the understanding of Don’s work is to see it in context with the spaces or with other works of his. This exhibition will give us a good chance to demonstrate just how the art came into being and what Don accomplished with it. In context the individual works gather meaning,” said Flavin Judd, Co-President, Judd Foundation.

THE MUSEUM OF MODERN ART ACQUIRES COMPLETE SET OF AUGUST SANDER’S LANDMARK ACHIEVEMENT PEOPLE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY, 1892–1954

The Museum of Modern Art announces the acquisition of a complete set of August Sander’s People of the Twentieth Century (1892–1954), the artist’s comprehensive visual examination of German society that remains among the most ambitious undertakings in the history of photography. Produced over a 60-year period, the 619 photographs are widely celebrated for embracing photography’s unique ability to capture detail, and its potential to evoke meaning through straightforward description. MoMA acquired the set through the generosity of the Sander family, and is the only museum to hold the body of work in its entirety.

All 619 works were printed with extreme sensitivity from the artist’s glass plate negatives by Gerd Sander, the artist’s grandson and a leading authority on his work, and Jean-Luc Differdange between 1990 and 1999 in an edition of seven. The only public exhibition of the complete project was at the 30th São Paulo Biennial, in 2012.

Sander first exhibited a selection of 100 prints in 1927 at the Cologne Art Union. Two
years later, 60 portraits from this body of work were published in the book Antlitz der Zeit (Face
of Our Time), which marked the beginning of its international recognition.

In the history of photography there are few works that rival August Sander’s People of the Twentieth Century in scope or influence,” said Quentin Bajac, The Joel and Anne Ehrenkranz Chief Curator of Photography at MoMA. “It is exhilarating to bring it into the collection to contextualize not only Eugéne Atget and Walker Evans, but also the Bechers, Diane Arbus, Judith Joy Ross, Rineke Dijkstra, and many others who cite his achievement as essential to the development of their own.

Sander (German, 1876–1964) began to conceive of the structure for his life’s work in the mid-1920s, dividing the images into seven groups that incorporated at least 45 distinct portfolios. The first of these groups, “The Farmer,” begins with a portfolio of Archetypes (or Stammappe) that establishes the rural community of the Westerwald region in Germany as the foundation for what Sander believed to be “universally human.” Once Sander had identified his broader ambition for the work, he sought out the individuals who could function as both fact and metaphor in his work. Sander titled the subsequent six groups “The Skilled Tradesman,” “The Woman,” “Classes and Professions,” “The Artists,” “The City,” and “The Last People” (depicting old age, sickness, and death). These groups and the portfolios they contain reflect both the employment divisions and social structures of the era. The AWESOME ASIAN BAD GUYS intellectual property originally began as a 2-minute video on Dypiangco and Epino’s National Film Society YouTube channel, where they incubated the project as part of the PBS Digital Studios network. With a modest but highly engaged and passionate audience, the duo recruited key talent and then took their concept to Kickstarter, where they raised production funds and expanded their fan base.
