Absolut® Unveils Its First State-Inspired Vodka Honoring The Lone Star State

Cucumber and Serrano Chili Flavors Celebrate the Best of Contemporary Texas

Today, the world’s most iconic vodka brand unveils its eighth and latest addition to the Absolut® Limited Editions portfolio with the launch of Absolut® Texas – the brand’s first and only state-inspired flavor. Internationally renowned San Antonio-based artist Cruz Ortiz designed the Absolut® Texas bottle as a modern take on classic Texas iconography.

Absolut® Texas is the eighth flavor in the US brand’s Limited Edition portfolio, which launched in 2007 with the introduction of Absolut® New Orleans, a flavor reminiscent of the Big Easy. Each year since, Absolut® has introduced the following US limited edition flavors – Absolut® Los Angeles in 2008, Absolut® Boston in 2009, Absolut® Brooklyn in 2010, Absolut® San Francisco in 2011, Absolut® Miami in 2012 and Absolut® Chicago in 2013.

The taste of Absolut® Texas is rich and smooth with notes of fresh cucumber, and a warm spicy character; inspired by the flavors of Southwestern cuisine. It pairs well with a myriad of ingredients, such as cranberry, cilantro and grapefruit soda.

“From the unique Southwestern flavor to the one-of-a-kind bottle design, Absolut® Texas is our biggest and boldest Limited Edition flavor to-date,” said Afdhel Aziz, Brand Director, Absolut Vodka, Pernod Ricard USA. “Absolut® Texas was truly designed as a celebration of all the best that contemporary Texas has to offer.”

Cruz’s bottle design features a modern spin on iconic Texas imagery, including a “cosmic caballero” cowboy boot against a stylized Texas landscape and his take on the Texas Star.  The bottle also features Absolut® founder Lars Olsson Smith wearing a cowboy hat, marking only the second time in the brand’s history in which Smith’s logo has been altered.

Two Wheels and Still a Genuine Porsche: Porsche Launches new Bicycle Collection for Spring 2014

Porsche is synonymous with sportiness, performance and driving pleasure – attributes that apply on two wheels as well as four: Porsche is expanding its Driver’s Selection range to include new bikes, available from March 2014. The Porsche Bike RX, Porsche Bike RS and Porsche Bike impress through their use of innovative materials, and deliver a sporty ride both on the road and off it. The design is typically Porsche: The frames of the new bikes are reminiscent of the silhouette cut by the sportscars produced in Zuffenhausen.

Featuring a 20-speed gear assembly supplied by Shimano and 27.5 inch wheels, the new Bike RX is the ideal partner for off-road routes. The mountain bike’s high-end carbon frame blends stability with a low weight and outstanding damping properties, guaranteeing boundless riding pleasure in the great outdoors. A DT Swiss air-suspension fork and hydraulic disc brakes supplied by German brake specialist Magura ensure optimum control for every manoeuvre and on all terrain.

The Bike RS also features a high-end frame, with ergonomic components made from carbon, bringing the sport bike’s overall weight to just nine kilograms. A 20-speed gear assembly makes the bike ideal for particularly sporty rides through vibrant urban settings or on extended trips. What’s more, the XTR equipment provided by Shimano and the ultra-lightweight brakes supplied by Magura ensure complete exclusivity on the road, even without an eight-cylinder engine.

The Porsche Bike, in turn, features a Shimano Alfine 8-speed hub gear assembly, which permits the eight gears to be shifted with ease. A low-wear geared belt drive transfers the power to the wheels without making a sound, while the MT26 disc brakes provided by Magura ensure optimum safety – making the Porsche Bike the ideal companion when navigating through the urban jungle.

Another outstanding feature of the Porsche Bikes is the anti-theft label, applied as standard under the paint on the frame. The label contains a unique code and is intended to deter thieves. Should a theft nevertheless occur, this code can then be used online to report the bike as stolen. Registered bikes can ultimately be checked by anyone – online and while on the move – simply by using an iPhone app and QR code, making it considerably more difficult to sell on stolen bikes.

The Porsche Bikes will launch on the global markets in three sizes (S, M and L) from March 2014. Details of these and other products in the Porsche Driver’s Selection range can be found in Porsche Centres around the world and online at http://www.porsche.com/shop. Not all products are universally available.

Cambodian Transgender Activist Sou Sotheavy Wins 2014 David Kato Vision & Voice Award

The David Kato Vision & Voice Award is proud to announce that the 2014 award went to Cambodian transgender activist Sou Sotheavy. Now 75 years old, she has spent the last two decades working to establish a national network of organizations to support lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people across the country.  Sou was presented with the award on stage at the prestigious Teddy Awards ceremony Friday, February 14, at the 2014 Berlin International Film Festival.

Frank Mugisha, Chair of the David Kato Vision & Voice Award and Executive Director of Sexual Minorities Uganda (SMUG), presented Sou with the award , which was accompanied by a short film profiling Sou and an on-stage interview with

Mugisha.

Awarded annually, the David Kato Vision & Voice Award is presented to an individual who demonstrates outstanding courage and leadership in advocating for the rights of LGBT individuals, particularly in challenging circumstances and unsupportive policy environments. The award provides winners with a global media platform and a $10,000 grant to support their efforts. The 2014 David Kato Vision & Voice Award is presented in memory of Eric Ohena Lembembe, who served as Executive Director of the LGBT human rights organization CAMFAIDS in Cameroon before he was brutally murdered in July of 2013.

Grassroots activists around the world are leading the work to secure LGBT rights and defend our communities,” said Jack Beck, Program Manager of the award. “Yet so often these crucial efforts go unrecognized and unfunded. Through the David Kato Vision & Voice Award, we are able to provide activists with a platform to elevate the issues that are affecting their communities, as well as much needed funding to sustain and expand their work.”

Sou was born on 8 December 1940 in Takeo province, Cambodia. Before the radical communist regime of the Khmer Rouge took over in 1975, she studied performing arts in the capital of Phnom Penh and worked as a military nurse. Her first involvement with human rights advocacy began in 1985 when she conducted HIV/AIDS outreach for the Khmer Development Freedom Organisation (KDFO). In 1999, realizing the need for special attention to LGBT issues, Sou established the Cambodian Network for Men Women Development (CMWD), the first Cambodian NGO to support LGBT people, where she continues to serve as president today. Active throughout 15 provinces, CMWD has provided much needed capacity building to LGBT groups, providing invaluable support for local programs and advocacy.

Until today, CMWD and Sou’s efforts have received no international attention. By acknowledging the importance of her work on these issues, Sou hopes the David Kato Vision & Voice Award will inspire and encourage more people to join the movement against discrimination in Cambodia and around the world. With more funding and volunteer activists working with Sotheavy in the provinces, she will reach out to a broader audience and support more LGBT people and organizations in Cambodia’s remote rural areas, where the education level is low, discrimination is rampant, and LGBT people remain forced to hide their true identity.

I am tremendously moved to be given this award that to me symbolizes the struggle for rights and freedom for LGBT people in Cambodia,” said Sou. “I think of the torture and suffering that I have endured throughout my life. Today, I am fortunate to live a life that I have always dreamed of, a life that allows me to help LGBT Cambodians escape the torture, contempt, and discrimination that exists in many families and in Cambodian society.”

I have been working without funds for a very long time,” Sou added. “This award will allow me to help my organization, train my team, and ultimately strengthen the rights of LGBT people in Cambodia. On the day I receive the award, my wish is that LGBT people from around the world will help support our LGBT communities in Cambodia, who are now facing a resurgence of violence from authorities. I will fight until the end of my life. I will not stop until the rights for LGBT exist like for other people.”

As we celebrate Sotheavy’s life and work, the global movement for LGBT rights continues to mourn Eric’s loss and the loss of so many other LGBT activists and community members over the past year,” said George Ayala, David Kato Vision & Voice Award Advisory Committee Member and Executive Director of the Global Forum on MSM & HIV (MSMGF). “We commemorate Eric’s legacy and the lives of everyone we lost last year; their memory and contributions will continue to ripple brightly through our communities for years to come.”

The Library Company, Founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731, Opens Groundbreaking Gay History Exhibition

The  Late gay activist Harry Hay said history knew more about gay people than it knew it knew. “That’s So Gay: Outing Early America,” running through October 17, at the Library Company, proves the point. Benjamin Franklin’s library, with its extensive collections of books, prints, ephemera, and photographs covering more than three centuries of early American history, contains stories about all kinds of loves and gender identifications.

The Library Company is an independent research library specializing in American history and culture from the 17th through the 19th centuries. Founded in 1731 by Benjamin Franklin, the Library Company is America’s oldest cultural institution and served as the Library of Congress from the Revolutionary War to 1800. The Library Company was the largest public library in America until the Civil War and includes the personal libraries of prominent early American bibliophiles such as James Logan. Open to the public free of charge, it houses one of the world’s largest holdings of early American imprints. Particular strengths of the collection include economic history, women’s history, African American history, history of medicine, history of philanthropy, and visual culture.

The exhibition does not try to say definitively whether an historic figure was lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender. Rather it looks at individuals who took part in same-sex relationships, wrote poems and novels celebrating such relationships, deviated from gender norms, and suffered for transgressive behavior. The gayatlcp.org blog invites remote visitors to view exhibition material and participate in the conversation.

Walt Whitman and Harriet Hosmer are examples of people whose lives and works reveal a gay sensibility. In the third edition of his Leaves of Grass (1860), Whitman added a section of forty-five Calamus poems, which celebrate relationships between men. (In Greek mythology, Kalamos was a youth who chose to drown rather than outlive his friend Karpos and was transformed into a marsh reed.) Regardless of what Whitman may have done behind closed doors (or along the “margins of pond-waters”), his Calamus poems have become important texts for readers looking for gay content.

The sculptor Harriet Hosmer depicted strong women in myth and history who persevered despite adversity at the hands of men. Hosmer had “short, thick, brown curls, which she tosse[d] aside with her fingers, as lads do.” Living in Rome, Hosmer was one of the “jolly bachelors” in actress Charlotte Cushman’s social circle.

Throughout the 19th century, sex-segregated activities were so common for both men and women they were rarely remarked upon. Recently, biographers have proposed that Abraham Lincoln may have had intimate relationships with one or more of his male friends. Similarly, it is easy now to see temperance activist Frances Willard (1839-1898), with the “smashes” she developed on girls at school and the other passionate relationships she formed with women, as a gay person.

The exhibition also looks at gay cultural expressions—in fiction, poetry, and art. Placing characters in same-sex environments allowed artists to explore the dynamics of intimate same-sex friendships. Consider Melville’s description of Ishmael and Queequeg in Moby-Dick as a “cosy, loving pair.” Similarly, scenes of women in private settings became popular in Victorian genre stereographs (shown in 3D in the gallery).

The Library Company has previously made pioneering contributions to historical research in African American History and Women’s History through diligent curation of our unrivaled collections of print and visual source material. With “That’s So Gay” we hope to have a similar influence on scholarly research in the field of Queer Studies.
