During the nominations process, all voting members of the Music Branch will receive a Reminder List of works submitted in the category and a DVD copy of the song clips.  Members will be asked to watch the clips and then vote in the order of their preference for not more than five achievements in the category.  The five achievements receiving the highest number of votes will become the nominations for final voting for the award.  A maximum of two songs may be nominated from any one film.

To be eligible, a song must consist of words and music, both of which are original and written specifically for the film.  A clearly audible, intelligible, substantive rendition of both lyric and melody must be used in the body of the film or as the first music cue in the end credits.

The 86th Academy Awards® nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center®, and televised live on the ABC Television Network.  The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide.

289 Feature Films In Contention For 2013 Best Picture Oscar®


Two hundred eighty-nine feature films are eligible for the 2013 Academy Awards®, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced today.

To be eligible for 86th Academy Awards consideration, feature films must open in a commercial motion picture theater in Los Angeles County by midnight, December 31, and begin a minimum run of seven consecutive days.

Under Academy rules, a feature-length motion picture must have a running time of more than 40 minutes and must have been exhibited theatrically on 35mm or 70mm film, or in a qualifying digital format.

Feature films that receive their first public exhibition or distribution in any manner other than as a theatrical motion picture release are not eligible for Academy Awards in any category. The 86th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 16, 2014, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

2014 Sundance Film Festival Announces 20th Anniversary of Hoop Dreams as ‘From the Collection’ Screening


The Sundance Institute has announced that the newly restored Hoop Dreams (1994) will screen in the From the Collection Program at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, 20 years after the film made its world premiere at the 1994 Festival. The recently completed restoration represents the collaborative effort of Sundance Institute, UCLA Film & Television Archive, the Academy Film Archive and Kartemquin Films. Filmmakers Steve James, Peter Gilbert and Frederick Marx and subject Arthur Agee are expected to participate in an extended Q&A immediately following the January 20 screening. The 2014 Festival will be January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah.

“Hoop Dreams completely changed the way we experience documentary films and the stories they tell. And that profound impact is still being felt 20 years later,” said John Nein, Senior Programmer for the Sundance Film Festival. “People assume that these seminal films will stay safe on their own, when in fact we really need to take a proactive approach to safeguarding them. We are proud to be part of the film’s history and, through its restoration, its future as well.”

Filmed over five years, with unprecedented access, Hoop Dreams, directed by Steve James, chronicles the lives of Arthur Agee and William Gates, two inner-city teenagers from Chicago. Through their skills on the basketball court they struggle to escape their surroundings and realize their dreams of making it to the NBA. It won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 1994 Sundance Film Festival. Despite its length (171 minutes) and unlikely commercial prospects, it received high critical and popular acclaim, became an Academy Award nominee for Best Film Editing and was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2005

The late Roger Ebert was famously an early advocate for this film and said in an October 1994 review, “A film like Hoop Dreams is what the movies are for. It takes us, shakes us, and make us think in new ways about the world around us. Hoop Dreams was shot primarily on analog Beta SP videotape, so the image was cropped and transferred for its commercial release. Working from multiple elements, including standard definition video masters and a 35mm film print, the project team created a new uncropped, high definition digital master that better represents the pictorial quality of the original videography. Digitally remastered at Modern VideoFilm with sound restoration by Audio Mechanics, this version allows future audiences to see the film as conceived by its filmmakers.

The Sundance Collection at UCLA (The Collection) is a film preservation partnership established in 1997. The Collection is specifically devoted to the preservation of independent documentaries, narratives and short films supported by Sundance Institute and has grown to nearly 2,300 holdings representing 1,800 titles, including recent additions such as El Mariachi, Winter’s Bone, Paris is Burning, Johnny Suede, Working Girls, Crumb, Groove, Better This World, The Oath and Paris, Texas. Titles are generously donated by individual filmmakers, distributors and studios.

Before they compete for the opportunity to inspire millions, the Team Kellogg’s athletes will be the faces of a variety of Kellogg’s brands on limited-edition boxes this winter.

Dating back to 1976, the Kellogg Company have had a long history of helping athletes start the day off right through its support of the United States Olympic Committee. Looking forward, Kellogg is proud to support the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Teams for the 2014 and 2016 Games, as well as Team USA athletes at the 2015 Pan American and Parapan American Games. Kellogg’s products are available to Team USA athletes at all U.S. Olympic Training Centers in Colorado Springs, Colo., Lake Placid, N.Y., and Chula Vista, Calif.

Barneys New York Returns to Downtown Manhattan with Flagship Store at Historic Chelsea Location

From its original opening in 1923, Barneys New York was a consistent and powerful presence, iconic to the downtown New York landscape 

Barneys New York, the luxury specialty retailer, announced today that it will return to its downtown roots on 7th Avenue between 17th Street and 16th Street with a significant flagship slated to open within 2017. An original presence in the Chelsea neighborhood spanning 90 years, the new Barneys New York flagship will occupy a major portion of its former historic store, providing a unique shopping experience currently absent in the downtown market.

Barney Pressman opened his men’s store, “Barney’s,” on Seventh Avenue in Chelsea in 1923. Launched as a discount retailer, by the 1970s the store evolved into a New York City luxury menswear destination, becoming an early champion of European brands. It later became an international arbiter of high style for both women and men in the 1970s, renowned for discovering and developing new and innovative design talent. Barneys New York expanded into its existing flagship location on Madison Avenue in 1993, and closed the Seventh Avenue location in 1997. 

Today, Barneys New York operates flagship stores in New York City, Beverly Hills, Chicago, Seattle, Boston, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Scottsdale along with a preeminent luxury online store, http://www.Barneys.com, as well as 25 other stores and outlets across the United States. 

The downtown flagship will consist of five floors totaling close to 57,000 square feet. The store will have 200 feet of frontage running along the majority of the Seventh Avenue block and wrapping the corner of 16th Street, providing ample space for its world-renowned window displays. The interior will maintain an aesthetic consistent with the recent renovations of the Madison Avenue store, which emphasize a modern, open, gallery-like feel. The Barneys New York downtown store will carry men’s and women’s designer clothing, shoes, and accessories, and will feature a Foundation level for cosmetics, skincare, and fragrances. Preliminary plans also include a Freds restaurant on the uppermost retail floor.

Today’s announcement represents the realization of our long-standing goal of returning to downtown with a substantial location,” said Barneys New York Chief Executive Officer Mark Lee. “The opportunity to revitalize our presence with a state-of-the-art store on the same street where the company served customers for 75 years only enhances that plan. We believe the robust and growing downtown market is under penetrated in terms of a larger specialty retailer, and we look forward to serving these customers again with what we anticipate will be one of our most important stores.”

The thriving Madison Avenue flagship will continue to operate as the largest store for the company, which along with the Upper West Side, Soho and Brooklyn locations, provides Barneys New York with an exceptionally strong presence across New York City.
