Master the season’s three hottest looks with tips and tricks from Nordstrom
Autumn’s on its way, and we hope fashion followers of all kinds will find something to adore this season. Nordstrom have broken down each of the season’s hottest trends and explained how to wear it, so whether you find yourself straddling a motorcycle or in the company of ladies who lunch this fall you’ll always be in top form.
Trend #1: Lady Luxe
Ladylike looks move in and out of style every fall, but this year they’re definitely in. What’s new this season is that prim and proper dressing isn’t restricted to any one decade; every fashion maven of the past is in play, so long as you give their look a luxe 21st century update.
Seeking to update that midi skirt from last year? Add a matching sweater, collared button-down, and pair of tights for a pulled-together, Mad Men-inspired look that’s way more power-Peggy than season one-Peggy.
Tory Burch “Kerry” silk blouse, $295. “Walda” sweater, $325. “Leigh” A-line skirt, $350.
Grandes dames of the 70’s more your style? Look no further – a fitted long-sleeve dress in an oversized print is just the ticket. Add a pair of chunky heels and some larger-than-life curls to complete the look.
Marc by Marc Jacobs “Intarsia” sweater dress, $458. Classic leather belt, $158.
If your idea of ladylike dressing is a little more modern – think Blair Waldorf, not Betty Draper – some serious darting and out-of-this-world texture will get you where you want to go. Nothing fits a princess of the Upper Eastside better than a super-chic party dress, and a fresh face and this number by Miss Wu certainly fits the bill.
Miss Wu “Radiant Faille” feather dress, a Nordstrom exclusive, $995.
The one thing ladies of all eras can agree on as a counterpoint to the massive platforms of years past: single-sole pumps for fall. Give yours an update with a slick patent leather finish and some rough-and-tumble studs, then pair with everything in your wardrobe. Prefer a slightly more manageable pair? Try an animal print petite-stiletto pump with a needle-thin heel – it’s the perfect update for a classic look.
Valentino “Rockstud” t-strap pump, $945. Kurt Geiger London “Buckingham” pump, $450
Trend #2: Biker Chic
Break out the leather and start up those motorcycles – one of this fall’s biggest style statements comes in the form of moto jackets, biker boots, and second-skin leggings. No matter how you style it, adding a touch of toughness to your look is totally on-trend this season.
Rules were meant to be broken, right? After all, that’s why wearing a motorcycle jacket as a shirt, donning a lambskin skirt, and topping the whole thing off with a leather vest is no big deal for you.
Rebecca Taylor lambskin vest, $695. Moto jacket (here, worn as a shirt), $695. Utility skirt, $295.
Biker chicks are always on the go, so comfy cropped pants, a wear-with-anything jacket, and a leather tee are right up your alley. Pair them all with a pair of simple black single-sole pumps and you’ve got a look that works no matter where you’re headed.
Vince bouclé leather jacket, $220. Leather-sleeve tee, $255.
Skirts more your style? Think schoolgirl-with-attitude and toss on some biker boots, layered sweaters, and a military jacket to make sure your look’s more punk than prim and proper.
Vince Camuto military inspired coat, $198. Halogen sweatshirt sweater, $69. Halogen roll-sleeved blouse, $58. Hinge tweed skater skirt, $68 Vince Camuto “Bocca” buckled boot, $228.95.
Sometimes a sleek bootie makes just as much of a statement as a pair of Docs – especially when they’re this smooth. Wear with tights, leather leggings, and, well, anything else. Seeking something with a slightly chunkier heel? Kurt Geiger’s wedge booties are steady enough that you can sling your leg over a bike without slipping.
Michael Michael Kors “Ashbury” bootie, $184.95. Kurt Geiger London “Albany” bootie, $595
Then again, sometimes your shoes need to say you’re not messing around. Enter this pair by Saint Laurent Paris. Wear ‘em with fishnet tights for a look early-90s Courtney Love would love.
Saint Lauren “Leaf Buckle” moto boot, $1,395.
Trend #3: Him for Her
Menswear-inspired styles are a staple every year, but this fall’s look has three key elements that are easy to wear and hard to beat: the oversized coat, the masculine print, and the oxford.
There’s nothing staid about this coat by Dries Van Noten, and that’s a good thing – now you know that the best way to update a boxy, masculine silhouette is to add something sparkly and feathered.
Dries Van Noten Coat, $2,595.
A menswear-inspired coat doesn’t have to hide the fact that you’re a lady. Junya Watanabe’s houndstooth trench for Comme Des Garcons is pretty much perfect – it’s got on old-school print and tough zippers, but the fitted silhouette makes sure everyone knows you’re all woman.
Junya Watanabe Comme Des Garcons Trench, $2,470.
What goes on underneath the coat? A big houndstooth sweater and cropped pants, of course. Update a borrowed-from-the-boys crewneck with banded pants and cap-toe pumps for a look that’s totally updated but obviously inspired by menswear.
Theory “Elibeth” wool blend coat, $755. “Astral P.” houndstooth turtleneck sweater, $315. “Persha” crop banded pants, $325.
If mixing things up is more your style, pay attention: donning two different masculine patterns on top and bottom looks like a gutsy move, but it’s surprisingly easy to pull off. Just make sure they share some colors and add something a little girly on your feet – in this case, a pair of high-heeled booties.
rag & bone pullover, $275. Easy drawstring pants, $350. “Harrow” bootie, leather, black, $495.
The most versatile menswear touch of all is a classic patent leather oxford flat. Pair it with cropped pants, a skater skirt, or even a flirty winter floral for a just touch of sheen. If a smoking slipper is more your style, stick with patent and try a pointed-toe flat – it’s the perfect balance between feminine and masculine.
Lanvin “Boyish” oxford flat, $995.Carvela Kurt Geiger “Lizzie” Pointed Toe Flat, $89.95
