National Breast Cancer Awareness Month: The 5th Anuual ‘Bra for a Cause” Fundraising Event

Promises of Tomorrow, a Texas-based nonprofit organization, has announced a fall event aimed at raising awareness and financial support for people battling breast cancer. The event, called ‘Bras for a Cause’, raises money by auctioning custom designed bras which are modeled by Dallas-Ft. Worth area firefighters. The event is being supported by BioTE Medical, a nationwide leader in natural hormone replacement therapy.

The Glass Cactus at The Gaylord Texan Resort will be the location for the 5th Annual ‘Bras for a Cause’ Fundraising Event, Tuesday October 1 from 6-10PM. The event features firefighters modeling custom ‘Bras for a Cause’. The ‘Bras for a Cause’ will be auctioned off during the evening as participants are encouraged to outbid others in order to raise money for breast cancer awareness and support.

Promises of Tomorrow and the ‘Bras for a Cause’ events were co-founded by DeDe Galindo and Emily Weathers, whose lives have been touched by breast cancer. Ms. Weathers commented, “My mother and grandmother were both diagnosed with breast cancer in the same year. Having gone through that as a young girl has motivated me to help others.” Ms. Galindo added, “Even though we have lots of fun at our ‘Bras for a Cause’ events, this is very serious. We want to be there for people when they or their family are fighting breast cancer.”

Galindo and Weathers said that money raised goes to a number of areas of support. Weathers said, “One of our primary goals is to provide genetic testing for those at risk who cannot pay for it themselves.” Using financial gifts efficiently is a key operational goal. According to Galindo, “We run lean and mean. Other than one part-time paid administrative person, all of our staff are volunteers. This means that a very high percentage of every dollar donated goes to help people and families living with the challenge of breast cancer.”

Both Galindo and Weathers acknowledged the support of corporate sponsors. They include BioTE Medical, Hormonal Health, Wellness and Skin Center, Texas Breast Specialists and The Center for Cancer & Blood Disorders.

The Museum of Contemporary Art (Los Angeles) has announced that award-winning actress and activist Sharon Stone will host the 8th MOCA Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts luncheon on November 6, 2013 at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, Beverly Hills. This year’s highly anticipated award welcomes guests from the contemporary art, philanthropy, film, fashion and entertainment worlds and honors celebrated Los Angeles artists Lita Albuquerque, Helenmoca Pashgian, Nancy Rubins and Betye Saar. Ticket prices range from $275 to $1,000 and tables for
10 are $5,000.

The MOCA Award to Distinguished Women in the Arts was established in 1994 by the MOCA Projects Council to recognize the many gifted women providing leadership and innovation in the visual arts, dance, music, and literature. Past recipients include noted collector and patron Beatrice Gersh (1994), editor Tina Brown (1997), choreographer Twyla Tharp (1999), actress and director Anjelica Huston (2001), and artists Barbara Kruger (2001), Yoko Ono (2003), Jenny Holzer (2010), and Annie Leibovitz (2012).

Lita Albuquerque was among the first founding artists for MOCA and gained international acclaim for her ephemeral pigment installations. Helen Pashgian was one of the pioneers of the California Light and Space movement of the 1960s and participated in The Artist’s Museum (2010). Nancy Rubins blazed a trail as one of the most important sculptors of her generation, and her large-scale, outdoor sculpture has been a striking presence at MOCA Grand Avenue for more than a decade. Betye Saar, one of the great  assemblagists of our time, participated in important solo and group exhibitions at MOCA including WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution, 1965-1980 (2007) and Sanctified Visions (1990). The four artists were all represented in various exhibitions that were part of the Getty initiative Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A. 1945 – 1980, celebrating the birth of the Los Angeles art scene.

A fashion presentation by Los Angeles-based curated space Just One Eye, which offers extraordinary pieces of art, fashion, jewelry and objects and facilitates and fosters creative relationships between artists and designers, will be part of the event.

Sharon Stone is an actress, producer, writer, song writer/lyricist, activist, and humanitarian. She became one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading ladies after her role in “Basic Instinct” (1992). She received the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress and an Academy Award nomination for “Casino” (1995) as well as the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in A Drama Series and has starred in many critically-acclaimed film and television roles. Off screen, she has dedicated herself to various humanitarian causes and has been recognized for her activism, notably as a long-time advocate for HIV/AIDS research and hunger relief.

A pioneer in arts education, MOCA Education has consistently presented award-winning programming that benefits adults, families, students, and community members of all ages and backgrounds. Marg Helgenberger Teams Up Again with Stand Up To Cancer and The Safeway Foundation in the Fight against Breast Cancer

PUBLIC SERVICE CAMPAIGN WILL HELP RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR INNOVATIVE BREAST CANCER RESEARCH

STAND UP TO CANCER (SU2C), a program of the ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY FOUNDATION (EIF), and THE SAFEWAY FOUNDATION have collaborated on a second public service campaign featuring actress and SU2C Ambassador Marg Helgenberger. The campaign, entitled “Together, We’re Creating a Brighter Tomorrow,” is designed to raise funds and increase awareness for the fight against breast cancer. The campaign launches October 1, the start of NATIONAL BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH.

Stand Up To Cancer raises funds to hasten the pace of groundbreaking translational research that can get new therapies to patients quickly and save lives. SU2C also marshals the resources of the media and entertainment industries in the fight against this disease. An initiative of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, a non-profit organization – it began in the USA in 2008 with a landmark telecast on the ABC, CBS and NBC networks. The third U.S.-based telecast was broadcast on ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and 22 cable networks on Sept. 7, 2012. Internationally, in addition to the Netherlands, Stand Up To Cancer launched in the United Kingdom with a four-hour live televised fundraiser on Channel 4 in collaboration with Cancer Research U.K. on Oct. 17, 2012.

Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, with 1 in 8 women in the US affected each year.  Through this public service announcement, SU2C and The Safeway Foundation encourage men and women to support Stand-Up-to-Cancervital research to find a cure for breast cancer.

I am proud and honored to be a part of this campaign again and work closely with two organizations dedicated to eradicating this disease,” said Helgenberger, best known for her role as Catherine Willows on the CBS drama, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation. “I stand up for my mother and stand strong alongside all the women and families who have been affected by this disease.”

The campaign will coincide with Safeway’s annual in-store Breast Cancer Awareness fundraiser, which offers customers multiple opportunities to give at more than 1,600 Safeway stores across the United States and Canada. The campaign will extend through November 3.

At the center of the public service campaign is a limited-edition, breast cancer awareness-themed reusable shopping bag. The bag will be available for purchase at all Safeway locations, including Vons, Pavilions, Tom Thumb, Randalls, Dominick’s, and Carrs stores, as well as online at www.safewayfoundation.org. Two dollars from the sale of each $2.99 reusable bag will go directly to breast cancer research. Additionally, Safeway shoppers will have a chance to make a separate donation at checkout stands.
