The Exhibition Opens October 4, 2013
Patina Gallery is pleased to announce Ingrained, an exhibition of works from two masters of the wood medium, Liam Flynn and Gustav Reyes. Flynn, working in Ireland, turns and carves vessels of sublime simplicity, with their voluptuous forms and gently undulating surface part of the work’s unique appeal. Chicago-based artist Gustav Reyes has received accolades for his wood jewelry, bracelets, earrings and necklaces that, in their own way, also revel in the nuance of wood. The exhibition opens October 4 and runs through October 27, 2013.

Woodworkers often describe wood as a living material in that it trains the worker/artist as much as the worker/artist trains it. It cannot be forced but it will be coaxed, to turn and bend and hold shapes. Each of these artists has learned this. Each has learned to read the grain and character of the material and to work with it so that every completed work expresses a story of collaboration.

Both Flynn and Reyes are self-taught and come from families with traditions of working with wood. Flynn descends from generations of joiners and woodworkers while Reyes’s father was a carpenter who found relaxation crafting jewelry in the evenings after work. Liam Flynn’s turned and carved vessels are found in the collections of numerous museums, including London’s Victoria and Albert Museum and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.
