In February, Prince Harry visited Lesotho to see the difference Sentebale’s programmes were making to the children. At the end of his visit, he attended the Sentebale Gala Dinner in Johannesburg which was to mark the launch of a major fundraising campaign to build the Mamohato Centre for children and young people infected with, or affected by HIV. Lesotho’s main operations are based in Lesotho with the fundraising and management team based in London, headed up by Chief Executive, Cathy Ferrier. Both Princes remain active patrons of Sentebale. The exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture, on view May 9–August 14, will examine punk’s legacy, from its birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence of high fashion today. Original punk garments from the mid-1970s will be juxtaposed with recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear have borrowed punk’s visual symbols, with paillettes being replaced with safety pins, feathers with razor blades, and bugle beads with studs. Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of ‘do-it-yourself’ and the couture concept of ‘made-to-measure,’ the exhibition will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. ART WATCH: Cambodian Rattan: The Sculptures of Sopheap Pich

Now Through July 7, 2013
Galleries 209, 249 & 251

Curated by John Guy, this exhibition, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presents ten works by the contemporary Cambodian

SOPHEAP PICH

SOPHEAP PICH

artist Sopheap Pich (born in Battambang, Cambodia, 1971), who lives and works in Phnom Penh. Pich works principally in rattan and bamboo, constructing organic open-weave forms that are at the same time, solid and ethereal, representational and abstract. Much of his work is inspired by elements of the human anatomy or plant life, and his constructions combine his training as a painter with the spatial conceptualization of a sculptor, creating three-dimensional objects that are largely defined by their graphic character. Pich’s art consciously embodies his memories of culture and place. The exhibition is installed in three spaces in the Asian galleries, including an integration into historical displays, and is part of the Museum’s contribution to the New York City–wide Season of Cambodia.

New York City will host more than 125 artists from Cambodia for a major celebration of Cambodian arts, culture, and humanities when Season of Cambodia lights up the city’s cultural landscape in April and May 2013. Distinctive works from master and emerging artists and scholars—in ritual, music, visual arts, performance, dance, shadow puppetry, film, and academic forums—will be presented by 30 of New York’s most renowned arts and educational institutions, marking an unprecedented city-wide partnership initiative to celebrate one of the world’s most vibrant and evocative cultures.

Season of Cambodia is a special initiative of Cambodian Living Arts in partnership with Cambodia’s leading arts organizations and New York’s most vibrant cultural and academic institutions. The Festival features more than 125 Cambodian performing and visual artists at New York City’s stages, screens, galleries and public spaces, creating a broad and dynamic platform for Cambodia’s cultural treasures to be shared with an international audience. (You can view the entire schedule at http://seasonofcambodia.org/events/)

Tequila Herradura today announced the release of the first of a series of small-batchtequilas, Coleccion de la Casa, Reserva 2012, Port Cask Finish. Each year, a new tequila will be released that will offer consumers a one-of-a-kind experience. The inaugural product, Coleccion de la Casa, Reserva 2012 is a port cask finished reposado tequila that acquires its complex body and extraordinary smooth taste from resting in two different types of oak casks.

This is the newest offering in a legacy of innovation. Casa Herradura has been handcrafting the world’s finest tequilas for over 140 years.  Credited with inventing the reposado expression in 1974 and the extra anejo expression in 1995, Casa Herradura continues to push the boundaries of tequila, while balancing a respect for traditional processes.

Tasting Notes for Herradura Coleccion de la Casa, Reserva 2012 Port Cask Finished Reposado:
Color: Amber with shades of rose and copper
Aroma: An enticing balance of sophisticated smoky notes, warm tobacco, dried fruit, and a hint of spice.
Taste: The distinctive taste of oak aged agave complemented by hints of rich port, plum, and pepper.
Finish: Finishes smooth with the familiar taste of Herradura tequila and with undertones of dark chocolate.

Crafted by Master Distiller Maria Teresa Lara, Casa Herradura uses the finest blue agave, traditional production methods and a proprietary fermentation from naturally occurring wild yeast to create a tequila of unparalleled quality. The tequila is then rested in medium-char American oak casks for eleven months and then transferred to hand-selected vintage port casks from the renowned Duoro Valley in Portugal for an additional two months of aging. The double-maturation process accentuates the notes of cooked agave, increases complexity and delivers a nose of dried fruit and ripe plum infused with hints of cinnamon, caramel and chocolate.

Coleccion de la Casa is part of our longstanding exploration to innovate within the category and it fills a niche for tequila aficionados looking for something truly unique,” said Ann Stickler, Vice President and Managing Director of Tequilas, Brown-Forman. “We are able to pioneer new ways of making small batch tequilas and experiment with concepts that complement our traditional production process because of our heritage and expertise in crafting the finest tequilas for over 140 years.”

The first of our innovative barrel finish concepts, Port Cask Finish, complements Tequila Herradura Reposado’s award-winning taste profile while adding a new dimension of flavor. The result is a perfectly balanced blend and a new style of tequila,” said Tequila Herradura’s Master Distiller Maria Teresa Lara.

Casa Herradura is one of Mexico’s most historic and renowned tequila producers. Casa Herradura has been hand harvesting, handcrafting and estate bottling fine tequilas from the small town of Amatitan, Jalisco, since 1870. In 2007, Casa Herradura was acquired by Brown-Forman Corporation of Louisville, Ky.  Brown-Forman is a diversified producer and marketer of fine quality beverages and alcohol brands.

Coleccion de la Casa-Port Cask Finish will be available at fine wine and spirits stores in April. A limited quantity will be available in Mexico. Each 750 ml. Only 2,000 cases are available with a suggested retail price of $89.99.

THE ENDLESS SUMMER: THE BEST OF THE SHOWS & TRENDS (FROM) THE 2013 MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK SWIM SHOWS IN MIAMI BEACH

Let’s face it, this winter has been the worst, one of the most inconsistent, soul-sucking winter seasons of recent years. Truth be told, I am READY for the upcoming summer months. With the summer months stretching gloriously in front of us, I can’t wait for 90 degree weather and ditching the heavy overcoat. I am ready to live my days wearing as few pieces of clothing as possible. And more importantly, I am looking forward to going to the beach, getting away from it all, and generally rejuvenating my spirits.

If the 2013 MERCEDES BENZ FASHION WEEK SWIM shows held at the RALEIGH HOTEL (1775 Colleins Avenue, Miami Beach) were any indication, women across the spectrum will be having a most spectacular 2013 Spring/Summer season. Beach lovers will be able to worship the sun sporting a very wide variety of bikinis, one-piece and maillots in an equally wide variety of cuts, fabrics and print options. For spring/summer 2013, the designers who showed at the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Swim Shows captured the chic beach lifestyle of women everywhere. This included swimwear in optical/graphic/geometric prints. Other trends as seen on the runway includes a raft of tropical/floral prints (beyond lovely), hand-embroidered detailing, sophisticated black/white themed pieces, and animal prints (surely a take away from the runways of New York, London, Paris and Milan where fur and animal skins has made a major comeback since the fall/winter 2012 shows in February/March 2012). Other trends included a run on metallics, a surprising emphasis on neons, and pastels, and an emerging trend that highlights tribal and native influences.

Most important, with the increased focus on skin cancer and proper sun coverage, there were a great many beach caftans/coveralls that were decidedly modern. These pieces are designed to take a woman, who’s on vacation and in a relaxed mood, to go directly from the beach to dinner and/or cocktails in a seamless manner. Casual or “vacation formal”, the humble beach caftan –short, mid or long– is the idea piece for any and every woman.

Metropolitan Museum of Art Announces Gift of Major Cubist Collection Comprising 78 Works by Picasso, Braque, Gris, and Léger from Leonard A. Lauder

Billion Dollar Collection–One of the Foremost Collections of Cubist art in the World–Will Transform the Museum

“A Gift to the People of New York”

Thomas P. Campbell, Director and CEO of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, announced that Leonard A. Lauder has 19104_logopledged to give the Museum his collection of 78 works by Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, and Fernand Léger, which stands as one of the foremost collections of Cubism in the world.  Mr. Campbell concurrently announced that, in coordination with the gift, the Metropolitan Museum is establishing a new research center for modern art at the Metropolitan, supported by a $22-million endowment funded by grants from Museum trustees and supporters, including Mr. Lauder.

The Leonard A. Lauder Collection, distinguished by its quality, focus, and depth, includes 33 works by Picasso, 17 by Braque, 14 by Gris, and 14 by Léger. It is unsurpassed in the number of masterpieces and iconic works critical to the development of Cubism.  Among the highlights of the collection are: Picasso’s The Scallop Shell (“Notre avenir est dans l’air”) (1912)Woman in an Armchair (Eva) (1913), and Still Life with Cards, Glasses, and Bottle of Rum: “Vive la France”(1914; partially reworked 1915); Braque’s Trees at L’Estaque (1908) and The Violin (Mozart/Kubelick) (1912); Léger’s Houses under the Trees (1913) and Composition (The Typographer) (1917-18); and Gris’s Portrait of the Artist’s Mother (1912) and Figure Seated in a Café (Man at a Table) (1914).

The Leonard A. Lauder Research Center for Modern Art will be the first such center dedicated exclusively to modern art within an encyclopedic museum and serve as a leading center for scholarship on Cubism and modern art, distinguished by its intellectual rigor and range, and its resources available for study. The Center will bring together renowned scholars, fellows, and curators for focused inquiry within the rich global context of the Metropolitan’s collection.

Leonard A. Lauder

Leonard A. Lauder

Leonard’s gift is truly transformational for the Metropolitan Museum,” stated Mr. Campbell in making the announcement. “Although the Met is unique in its ability to exhibit over 5,000 years of art history, we have long lacked this critical dimension in the story of modernism. Now, Cubism will be represented with some of its greatest masterpieces, demonstrating both its role as the groundbreaking movement of the 20th century and the foundation for an artistic dialogue that continues today. This is an extraordinary gift to our Museum and our City.

The Lauder Collection is one of the most significant groups of Cubist art ever assembled. Over the past 37 years, Mr. Lauder has selectively acquired the best and most important works of the four preeminent Cubist painters–Picasso, Braque, Léger, and Gris. He made his first two Cubist acquisitions in 1976 and his most recent, a Juan Gris collage, in March 2013. Mr. Lauder will continue to look for opportunities to add Cubist works to the Collection he has committed to the Met. Continue reading

METAPHORS FOR EXPRESSION: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ART

GEORG BASELITZ, GÜNTHER FÖRG, MARTIN KIPPENBERGER, ALBERT OEHLEN, SIGMAR POLKE

APRIL 10 – JUNE 8, 2013
Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10 am-6 pm, Monday by appointment

Skarstedt Gallery London (23 Old Bond Street, City of Westminster, London W1S 4PZ, UK, t: +44 207 499 5200, f: +44 207 491 8805, london@skarstedt.com) is pleased to present an exhibition of singular works by leading contemporary German artists. Alternating between bold colour and sombre tones, humour and quiet reflection, the discourse of German artistic expression is contemplated in the works of Georg Baselitz, Günther Förg, Martin Kippenberger, Albert Oehlen and Sigmar Polke.

METAPHORS FOR EXPRESSION: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ART - Georg Baselitz - Orangenesser (Remix), 2005

METAPHORS FOR EXPRESSION: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ART – Georg Baselitz – Orangenesser (Remix), 2005 (left)

Georg Baselitz’s Orangenesser (Remix), 2005 attests to the prophecy of Eugène Delacroix’s succinct statement. Revisiting his seminal theme of the orange-eater from the 1980s, the upside-down figure painted into a simple composition reflects Baselitz’s concern with the formal qualities of picture- making. Through inversion, Baselitz distorts reality and renders the figure unfamiliar as the picture moves from figuration towards abstraction. In Baselitz’s drawings Untitled (Drinker) and (Drummer) also included in the exhibition, this technique of disorientation through inversion is similarly at play. Baselitz further distances the works in the Remix series from their forerunners as well as from his past, by painting from photographs of the earlier pieces. The pared down canvas and the rapid brush strokes of the Remix paintings demonstrate on a monumental scale the artist’s continued development through this self- referential activity.

METAPHORS FOR EXPRESSION: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ART - 15 Preis, 1987 by Martin Kippenberger

METAPHORS FOR EXPRESSION: CONTEMPORARY GERMAN ART – 15 Preis, 1987 by Martin Kippenberger (right)

15 Preis, 1987 by Martin Kippenberger plays on the double-meaning of the German word ‘preis’, signifying both ‘price’ and ‘prize’. Through inscription of the work’s monetary or reward value directly onto the canvas, Kippenberger derides the commodification of painting, as well as the idea that merit can be awarded to an artwork by categorising it as first prize. His use of cheap fabric imagery is at odds with the price of the artwork, and also pokes fun at the history of twentieth-century abstraction and the high values attributed to the masters of this form. Referencing his German predecessor Sigmar Polke, who began painting over store purchased fabric in the 1960s, Kippenberger inscribes the Preis paintings into art historical discourse whilst simultaneously mocking this canon. Budweiser Clydesdale Farm to Open for 2013 Season

Public Invited to Visit Baby Clydesdales, Including Super Bowl TV Star ‘Hope’ and ‘Stan,’ Named After Baseball Great Musial

Spring means the return of baseball and the opening day celebrations around the United States. It also marks another annual event celebrated by fans of the Budweiser Clydesdales – “opening day” at Warm Springs Ranch in mid-Missouri for public tours, where more than 35 baby Clydesdales are expected to be born in 2013.

Jeff Knapper, General Manager for Clydesdale Operations for Anheuser-Busch, said that through March 27, seventeen baby Clydesdales have been born at Anheuser-Busch’s state-of-the-art Clydesdale breeding farm, which is home to more than 100 Budweiser Clydesdales.  This includes Hope, the star of Budweiser’s award-winning and top-ranked Super Bowl commercial, and Stan, the first-born foal of 2013, named after all-time MLB great Stan Musial.

Public tours at the breeding farm are now open and the ranch remains open until Oct. 31.

Some tour dates, particularly Saturdays in the spring, already are sold out,” Knapper said. “On some other days there is limited availability. The popularity of the Super Bowl spot has certainly piqued the public’s curiosity around the training of Budweiser Clydesdales and how they spend their early years.”

The ranch offers twice-daily tours every day except for Wednesday. The tour costs $10 per person and lasts one-and-a-half hours. To reserve a tour spot (reservations are required) or for more information, visit www.warmspringsranch.com. Continue reading

Terry O’Neill (b 1938) is one of the greatest British photographers of the twentieth century.  He has achieved worldwide success documenting fashion, style and celebrities from the 1960s until the present day.  He has photographed countless icons during his 50 year career with his distinct style of capturing his subjects in unconventional or candid settings.  Terry O’Neill’s iconic photographs of Elton John are among his most well-known. A selection of them appeared in the 2008 book, Eltonography. Also considered among his most famous images are a series of shots showing American actress Faye Dunaway (his girlfriend at the time) at dawn on March 29, 1977, lounging next to the swimming pool at the Beverly Hills Hotel the morning after winning the Academy Award for Best Actress for Network, with several newspapers scattered around her and her Oscar statuette prominently shown on a table beside her breakfast tray. The series was photographed in both color and black & white. One black & white from the series hangs in the permanent collection of the National Portrait Gallery in London.

NEST will open a second location dedicated to home and gift accessories at Bal Harbour Shops late this spring.

The weekend will again feature vintage aircraft, period vehicles, guest speakers, education displays, demonstrations by reenactors portraying Allied and Axis troops and activities for school age kids.  Local actors and singers from Twilight Theatre will impersonate 1940’s celebrities and perform musical hits from the era throughout the weekend. Highlights include an opening ceremony recognizing local WWII veterans and a 1940’s-theme hangar dance.

Sunday morning will begin with a jeep-top religious service familiar to millions of American servicemen during and since the Second World War. Saturday evening will bring back the Big Band sound synonymous with the 1940’s at “Keep ’em Flying“, a hangar dance fundraiser featuring a 21-piece swing band.  Proceeds from the dance offset the cost of WWII Heritage Days, aircraft preservation and “Education Through Living History“, the group’s WWII history program made available to schools and youth groups free of charge.

Mr. Ewoud Swaak, the Honorary Consul to the Netherlands for Georgia and South Carolina, will be the keynote speaker at the WWII Heritage Days Opening Ceremony.  The theme of the program, Operation Market Garden: History and Legacy, will commemorate a battle in September 1944 when 40,000 Allied paratroopers attempted to liberate a series of cities, towns and bridges in Holland in an effort to shorten war. The WWII Heritage Days Opening Ceremony is expected to be one of the largest gatherings of WWII veterans in Georgia this year.  Activities begin at 9:30am.

Bruce Gamble, author of Swashbucklers and Black Sheep: A Pictorial History of Marine Fighting Squadron 214 in World War II, will describe the exploits and accomplishments of the famous squadron.  Award-winning aviation artist Marc Stewart will be displaying several of his WWII-theme prints.

WWII Heritage Days is a community celebration that will educate and entertain the entire family,” said Jim Buckley, CAF Dixie Wing leader.  The event draws enthusiasts to Peachtree City from throughout the southeast.

Our goal is to honor the Greatest Generation, the men and women who won the Second World War,” adds Buckley.

Organizations scheduled to attend include the Atlanta History Center, U.S. Army Signal Corps Museum, Marietta Museum of History, Kennesaw State University’s Museum of History & Holocaust Education, 1st Infantry Division (reenacted), Five-oh-First, 134th IR134 “Hoch und Deutschmeister” and Kelly’s Zeroes. Local civic organizations and schools are also invited to create and display 1940’s exhibits.

Suggested donation for “WWII Heritage Days” is $5, Children 5 and under free.  “WWII Heritage Days” will be held rain or shine. Please no pets. Tickets for “Keep ’em Flying” are $50 before April 22nd, $60 at the door.  Reserved tables and group discounts available.
