Sentebale was founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of the Lesotho Royal Family in response to the plight of the neediest and most vulnerable of Lesotho’s children, many who are victims of extreme poverty and Lesotho’s HIV/AIDs epidemic. In February, Prince Harry visited Lesotho to see the difference Sentebale’s programmes were making to the children. At the end of his visit, he attended the Sentebale Gala Dinner in Johannesburg which was to mark the launch of a major fundraising campaign to build the Mamohato Centre for children and young people infected with, or affected by HIV. Lesotho’s main operations are based in Lesotho with the fundraising and management team based in London, headed up by Chief Executive, Cathy Ferrier. Both Princes remain active patrons of Sentebale. The exhibition, Punk: Chaos to Couture, on view May 9–August 14, will examine punk’s legacy, from its birth in the 1970s through its continuing influence of high fashion today. Original punk garments from the mid-1970s will be juxtaposed with recent, directional fashion to illustrate how haute couture and ready-to-wear have borrowed punk’s visual symbols, with paillettes being replaced with safety pins, feathers with razor blades, and bugle beads with studs. Focusing on the relationship between the punk concept of ‘do-it-yourself’ and the couture concept of ‘made-to-measure,’ the exhibition will be organized around the materials, techniques, and embellishments associated with the anti-establishment style. Presented as an immersive multimedia, multisensory experience, the clothes will be animated with period punk videos and soundscaping audio techniques. Continue reading
